What Students Will Learn

This 5DOF Programmable Robotic Hand with Base for Arduino introduces students to the principles of robotics, kinematics, and mechatronics. Through hands-on assembly and programming, students develop understanding of servo motor control, joint articulation, and end-effector design. The five degrees of freedom allow realistic finger and wrist movement, enabling exploration of human-robot interaction and automation. Key learning outcomes include: programming sequential movements, understanding torque and load distribution, debugging control code, and applying engineering design processes. Students also gain practical experience in sensor integration and feedback loops when extending the project with optional sensors.

Who It's For

Designed for secondary school students in Years 7 to 10, this robotic hand is ideal for Digital Technologies, Design and Technologies, and STEM elective subjects. It also supports senior Engineering Studies and Robotics units in Years 11 and 12 where Arduino programming is required. The product is suitable for classroom use, after-school robotics clubs, and extension activities for gifted and talented students.

Australian Curriculum Links

This resource directly supports the Australian Curriculum: Digital Technologies (Years 7–10) – designing algorithms, implementing code in a general-purpose programming language, and managing data. In Science (Years 7–8), it connects to forces and motion, and energy transfer. For STEM F-10, it addresses the processes of investigating, designing, producing, and evaluating. Specific content descriptors include ACTDIP041, ACTDIP043, ACTDEK046, and ACSSU117. Teachers can align projects to curriculum outcomes for robotics, control systems, and computational thinking.

Coding Platform

This product is programmed using the Arduino IDE (free, open-source software). Students write code in C++ to control servo positions, create movement sequences, and implement conditional logic. The robot hand comes with example code and libraries to accelerate learning. No prior Arduino experience is required for teachers; comprehensive tutorials are provided.

What's in the Box

Each kit includes: pre-assembled robotic hand with five servos, acrylic base plate, Arduino-compatible control board, servo driver module, USB programming cable, mounting hardware, screwdriver, and a printed quick-start guide. Also included are five finger extension springs, cable management ties, and a storage box. The package supports one robotic hand unit; additional kits are required for class sets.

Classroom Setup & Requirements

Each robotic hand requires a computer with the Arduino IDE installed (Windows, macOS, or Linux). A USB port is needed for programming. The kit operates on 5V power supplied via USB; a dedicated 5V 2A power adapter is recommended for continuous use (not included). Classroom layout should allow pairs or small groups of 2–3 students per kit. Teachers should allocate 2–3 hours for initial assembly and calibration, followed by 3–4 hours for programming activities. A projector or screen for code demonstrations is helpful.
