What Students Will Learn
This Dinosaur Building Blocks Set engages students in hands-on STEM learning by constructing a large T-Rex model with integrated lights. Students explore fundamental engineering principles, including structural stability, mechanical assembly, and circuitry. As they build, they develop problem-solving skills, spatial reasoning, and an understanding of how electrical components function within a physical structure. The activity also introduces concepts of cause and effect, as students connect lights to create a working feature, fostering curiosity about basic electronics and design thinking.
Who It's For
This product is designed for students in Years 3 to 6, supporting cross-curricular learning in Science, Design and Technologies, and Mathematics. It is particularly suitable for classroom STEM activities, makerspace challenges, and extension projects. The set can be used in whole-class instruction, small group work, or as an independent learning task, making it versatile for various teaching contexts.
Australian Curriculum Links
This resource aligns with the Australian Curriculum F-10, specifically within Science (ACSSU076: forces and properties of materials; ACSSU097: electrical circuits), Design and Technologies (ACTDEK013: generating design ideas; ACTDEK019: evaluating functional solutions), and Digital Technologies (ACTDIK008: representing data and systems). It supports STEM F-10 integration by encouraging students to apply knowledge of physical sciences and design processes to create a functional model. Teachers can use it to address content descriptors in Year 4 Science (forces), Year 5 Design and Technologies (materials and systems), and Year 6 Digital Technologies (systems thinking).
Coding Platform
No coding required. This product focuses on hands-on construction and basic electrical assembly, making it accessible for students without prior coding experience. It serves as an excellent entry point for STEM learning before introducing coding platforms.
What's in the Box
Each Dinosaur Building Blocks Set includes: 1 large T-Rex skeleton structure with pre-moulded parts, 6 LED light modules with battery connections, 1 set of assembly instructions with step-by-step diagrams, 1 pack of screws and connectors, and 1 storage tray. All components are durable and designed for repeated classroom use. Additional pieces may vary by batch; contact admin@stemology.com.au for specific component lists.
Classroom Setup & Requirements
The set requires a flat workspace, such as a desk or table, with access to basic tools (e.g., small screwdriver, included in the box). No additional power source is needed as lights operate on pre-installed batteries. Recommended group size is 2 to 4 students per set to encourage collaboration. Estimated build time is 60 to 90 minutes, depending on student experience. Teachers should supervise younger students during assembly of electrical components.
