What Students Will Learn
This DIY Bath Bomb Science Kit for Kids introduces students to fundamental chemistry concepts through the hands-on creation of bath bombs. Learners will explore chemical reactions, including acid-base reactions, effervescence, and the role of binders and fillers. They will develop skills in measurement, observation, and prediction as they adjust ingredient ratios to produce different fizzing effects and textures. The kit also encourages scientific inquiry, data recording, and reflection on real-world applications of chemical processes, such as how ingredients interact to create a desired outcome. By the end of the activity, students will understand key STEM principles including states of matter, solubility, and the importance of precise experimentation.
Who It's For
Designed for students in Years 3 to 8, this kit aligns with primary and lower secondary science and STEM curricula. It is ideal for classroom lessons in chemistry, materials science, and design thinking. Subject areas include Science, STEM, and cross-curricular links to Mathematics (measurement) and English (instructional writing). The kit is suitable for whole-class instruction, small group work, or individual projects, and can be adapted for different learning levels by varying the complexity of the investigation.
Australian Curriculum Links
This product supports the Australian Curriculum F-10 in Science and STEM. Key content descriptors include: ACSSU077 (Solids, liquids, gases and changes of state), ACSSU095 (Chemical reactions involve rearranging atoms to form new substances), and ACSIS110 (Communicate ideas, findings and solutions to problems using scientific language). It also addresses Science Inquiry Skills such as planning and conducting experiments (ACSIS065, ACSIS104) and processing and analysing data (ACSIS068, ACSIS107). For STEM, the kit promotes design thinking and application of scientific principles to create a functional product, aligning with the STEM F-10 framework's focus on problem-solving and critical thinking.
Coding Platform
No coding required. This kit focuses entirely on hands-on science experimentation and does not involve digital technologies or programming. It is a pure STEM activity that emphasises chemical understanding and practical skills.
What's in the Box
Each kit includes sufficient materials for up to 30 students to create individual bath bombs. Contents: 500g baking soda, 250g citric acid, 100g cornstarch, 100g Epsom salts, 2 x 10ml essential oil bottles (lavender and lemon), 2 x 5g food-grade colouring powders (blue and pink), 10 x silicone moulds (assorted shapes), 10 x mixing bowls, 30 x disposable gloves, 30 x zip-lock bags for storage, 1 x instruction booklet with step-by-step guide and extension activity ideas, and 1 x teacher guide with curriculum links and risk assessment notes.
Classroom Setup & Requirements
Minimum requirements: a flat, non-porous surface for mixing (such as a plastic tablecloth), access to water for cleaning, and adequate ventilation. Recommended for a standard classroom of 30 students working in pairs or small groups. Each student or group needs a mixing bowl, mould, and ingredients. The activity takes approximately 45 to 60 minutes, plus drying time (24 hours). No specialist equipment is needed. Teachers should supervise ingredient handling and ensure students wear gloves. The kit is non-toxic and safe for classroom use, though students with sensitive skin should avoid direct contact with essential oils.
