DIY Fire Extinguisher Model Experiment Kit

What Students Will Learn

This hands-on experiment kit introduces students to the science of combustion and fire suppression. Through constructing and testing a working model of a fire extinguisher, students explore key concepts including the fire triangle (heat, fuel, oxygen), chemical reactions, and pressure systems. The kit encourages inquiry-based learning as students hypothesise, observe, and document how different variables affect extinguishing performance. Students also develop practical skills in following instructions, measuring materials, and recording experimental data.

Who It's For

Designed for students in Years 5–10, this kit is ideal for Science, STEM, and Chemistry classes. It supports differentiated learning and can be used in primary extension programs or secondary introductory chemistry units. The activity is suitable for individual or small-group work in classroom, laboratory, or STEM club settings.

Australian Curriculum Links

This kit directly supports the Australian Curriculum: Science (F–10) and STEM learning areas. Key content descriptors include:

  • Science Understanding (Chemical Sciences): ACSSU095 — changes to materials can be reversible or irreversible (Year 6).
  • Science Understanding (Chemical Sciences): ACSSU225 — chemical reactions involve rearranging atoms to form new substances (Year 9).
  • Science Inquiry Skills: Planning and conducting experiments, identifying variables, and communicating findings.
  • Design and Technologies: Applying knowledge of materials and systems to produce a functional model.

The kit also fosters cross-curricular links to Digital Technologies when used with optional data logging or graphing of experimental results.

Coding Platform

No coding required. This kit is a purely hands-on, inquiry-based experiment that focuses on physical science concepts and practical skills. It can be extended with optional digital recording of observations using spreadsheet or graphing software.

What's in the Box

  • 1 x reaction chamber (plastic bottle with pre-drilled lid)
  • 1 x delivery tube and nozzle assembly
  • 1 x measuring spoon set
  • 1 x pack of citric acid (food grade)
  • 1 x pack of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda)
  • 1 x safety goggles (child size)
  • 1 x instruction booklet with experiment guide and safety notes
  • 1 x observation worksheet template (printable PDF)

Note: Water and a small container (e.g., a cup or beaker) are required but not included.

Classroom Setup & Requirements

Each kit is designed for one student or a pair of students. For a class of 30, we recommend ordering 15–30 kits depending on group size. The experiment requires a flat, water-resistant surface (e.g., a lab bench or covered desk) and access to tap water. Adult supervision is recommended for younger students. The activity takes approximately 45–60 minutes, including setup, experimentation, and clean-up. Safety goggles are included and should be worn at all times during the experiment. The kit uses only common household materials and produces non-toxic waste.
