Students explore the principles of mechanics, electronics, and hygiene awareness by constructing a working hand wash machine. They develop problem-solving skills, fine motor coordination, and an understanding of how sensors, motors, and simple circuits interact to automate a real-world task. The activity also fosters design thinking as students test and refine their machine's operation.
Designed for students in Years 3 to 6, this product integrates with Science, Design and Technologies, and Health and Physical Education. It is suitable for classroom STEM rotations, extension activities, or cross-curricular projects linking technology with personal hygiene.
This resource directly supports content descriptors in the Australian Curriculum: Digital Technologies (ACTDIK001, ACTDIP006), Science (ACSSU097, ACSSU117), and Design and Technologies (ACTDEK010, ACTDEP015). It aligns with the STEM F-10 Integrated Curriculum by encouraging students to apply scientific inquiry, engineering design, and digital systems thinking to a tangible outcome.
No coding required. This product focuses on mechanical and electrical construction. However, teachers may extend the activity by integrating a microcontroller (not included) for students to add automated timing or sensor-based operation, providing an optional coding challenge.
Each kit includes a plastic housing, DC motor, battery holder with leads, push-button switch, connecting wires, plastic gears, pump mechanism, tubing, and all necessary screws and assembly hardware. A full-colour instruction guide with step-by-step diagrams and teacher notes is also provided. No additional tools are required.
Students work individually or in pairs. Each kit requires two AA batteries (not included). A flat desk space and basic safety scissors are sufficient. Assembly takes approximately 45–60 minutes. Teachers should allow time for testing and troubleshooting. No specialised lab equipment or internet access is needed.
