What Students Will Learn

This hands-on DIY Lucky Wheel Science Toy introduces students to core principles of engineering, probability, and design thinking. By constructing a functioning spinning wheel, learners explore mechanical advantage, friction, and balance while developing problem-solving and fine motor skills. The activity also reinforces mathematical concepts such as randomness, data collection, and fair testing, making it a versatile tool for integrated STEM lessons.

Who It's For

Designed for students in Years 3 to 6, this product is ideal for classroom use in Science, Mathematics, and Digital Technologies. It supports cross-curricular learning in STEM F-10 and is suitable for both primary school generalist teachers and specialist STEM educators. The activity can be adapted for differentiation, from guided construction to independent inquiry projects.

Australian Curriculum Links

This product aligns with the Australian Curriculum: Science (ACSHE050, ACSHE061, ACSIS065, ACSIS068) for investigating forces and fair testing. It also connects to Mathematics (ACMSP096, ACMSP117) for exploring chance and data. In Digital Technologies, it supports ACTDIK007 and ACTDIP010 when used with optional coding extensions for automated spinning or scoring. Fully mapped to STEM F-10 learning outcomes.

Coding Platform

No coding required for the basic build. For extension activities, the wheel can be integrated with micro:bit (optional, not included) to add automated spin mechanisms or digital scoring. Simple block-based coding platforms such as Microsoft MakeCode or Scratch can be used for data logging and probability experiments.

What's in the Box

Each kit includes laser-cut wooden base and wheel components, axle and bearing parts, colour-coded section markers, a dry-erase marker for customisation, assembly screws, and a teacher instruction booklet with lesson ideas. All materials are pre-cut and ready to assemble. No additional tools required.

Classroom Setup & Requirements

Each student or pair requires a clean desk space with access to a flat surface for assembly. Estimated build time is 30 to 45 minutes. The kit is low-mess and reusable; sections can be wiped clean for multiple uses. No batteries or external power needed. Suitable for classrooms with standard work areas and minimal storage.
