DIY Physical Science Craft Model
What Students Will Learn
This hands-on craft model introduces students to core principles of physical science, including force, motion, energy transfer, and simple machines. Through building and testing their own working model, students develop a tangible understanding of how physical laws govern everyday phenomena. The activity promotes inquiry-based learning, problem-solving, and fine motor skills as students assemble, modify, and experiment with their creation. Students will also gain experience in following technical instructions, recording observations, and drawing evidence-based conclusions.
Who It's For
Designed for students in Years 3 through 8, this product is suitable for primary and lower secondary classrooms. It aligns with Science, Design and Technologies, and STEM subject areas. The open-ended nature of the craft model allows teachers to differentiate instruction for varying ability levels, making it ideal for mixed-ability classes, extension activities, and inclusive learning environments.
Australian Curriculum Links
This product directly supports the Australian Curriculum: Science (Physical Sciences sub-strand) and Technologies (Design and Technologies) for Years 3–8. Key content descriptors include: ACSSU076 (forces can be exerted by one object on another), ACSSU117 (change to an object’s motion is caused by unbalanced forces), and ACTDEK013 (investigate how forces and materials are used in designed solutions). It also supports STEM F-10 learning outcomes by integrating science inquiry skills with design thinking and engineering practices.
Coding Platform
No coding required. This is a purely physical, hands-on craft model that focuses on mechanical and material science concepts. No digital devices, software, or programming knowledge is needed, making it accessible for classrooms with limited technology resources.
What's in the Box
Each kit contains all necessary materials to assemble one complete physical science craft model: pre-cut wooden or card components, axles, wheels, connectors, elastic bands, adhesive, and a detailed instruction booklet. Also included are teacher notes with discussion prompts, extension activities, and assessment rubrics. Consumable items are sufficient for one student or small group build. Additional classroom packs are available separately.
Classroom Setup & Requirements
No specialist equipment is required. Each student or pair will need a clear workspace, scissors, and optionally a ruler. Assembly takes approximately 30–60 minutes, with additional time for testing and experimentation. The model can be used as a single lesson activity or as part of a multi-week unit on forces, energy, or engineering design. The product is robust enough for repeated use and can be stored for future classes.
