What Students Will Learn

This DIY Salt Water Generator Science Kit provides a hands-on exploration of electrochemistry and renewable energy principles. Students will investigate how chemical reactions between salt water and metal electrodes produce an electrical current. They will learn to measure voltage and current, understand the concept of electrolysis, and explore variables such as salt concentration and electrode material. The kit fosters critical thinking, data collection, and experimental design skills while demonstrating real-world applications of sustainable energy sources.

Who It's For

Designed for students in Years 5 through 10, this kit is ideal for Science and STEM classes, as well as extension activities in Digital Technologies where data logging and analysis are incorporated. It supports differentiated learning and can be used in whole-class demonstrations, small group investigations, or individual projects.

Australian Curriculum Links

This kit directly addresses multiple content descriptors across the Australian Curriculum: Science (ACSSU097, ACSSU155, ACSSU182) covering electrical energy, chemical reactions, and energy transformations; STEM F-10 (AC9S6U03, AC9S8U05, AC9S10U04) focusing on investigating energy systems and designing solutions; and Digital Technologies (ACTDIP026, ACTDIP029) where students can collect and interpret experimental data using digital tools. It also supports cross-curricular priorities in sustainability and ethical resource use.

Coding Platform

No coding required. This kit focuses on physical experimentation and data collection. However, optional extension activities can incorporate microcontrollers (e.g., Arduino or micro:bit) for digital voltage logging and graphing, which can be integrated with platforms like MakeCode or Arduino IDE for advanced classes.

What's in the Box

Each kit includes: 1 pre-wired electrode set (copper and zinc), 1 salt water reaction chamber, 1 digital multimeter with leads, 1 LED indicator module, 1 set of alligator clip wires, 1 detailed instruction booklet with curriculum-aligned lesson plans, 1 safety guide, and a resealable storage bag. Teachers will need to supply table salt and tap water.

Classroom Setup & Requirements

Each kit is designed for individual or pair work. Recommended setup: one kit per 2 students, with access to a flat work surface, a source of tap water, and a small container for salt. No external power source is required. Lessons typically run for 45–60 minutes. The kit is reusable; only salt water needs to be replaced each session. Ensure adequate ventilation and supervise use of the multimeter.
