What Students Will Learn
Students explore the principles of light, lenses, and image projection while constructing a fully functional DIY slide projector from a wooden puzzle kit. This hands-on activity reinforces understanding of convex lenses, focal length, and the path of light, as well as the mechanics of simple machines used to adjust focus. Through assembly and testing, learners develop fine motor skills, spatial reasoning, and problem-solving abilities. They also gain practical experience in applying scientific concepts to create a real-world optical device, fostering creativity and engineering design thinking.
Who It's For
This kit is ideal for students in Years 3 to 8, with specific applications in Science (Physical Sciences), Design and Technologies (Engineering principles and systems), and STEM F-10 integrated learning. It is suitable for classroom activities, STEM clubs, and extension projects. The complexity of assembly and the depth of optical concepts can be adapted for younger learners with teacher guidance or older students working independently.
Australian Curriculum Links
Science (Physical Sciences): Years 3-4: Light from a source forms shadows and can be absorbed, reflected, and refracted (ACSSU080). Years 5-6: Light from a source forms shadows and can be absorbed, reflected, and refracted (ACSSU097). Years 7-8: The properties of light and how it interacts with matter, including refraction and the function of lenses (ACSSU152).
Digital Technologies: While no coding is required, the kit can be integrated with digital systems projects, such as creating a digital image sequence or using a tablet to display images for projection.
Design and Technologies: Years 3-4: Investigate how forces and the properties of materials affect the behaviour of a product or system (ACTDEK009). Years 5-6: Investigate how electrical energy can control movement, sound, or light in a designed product or system (ACTDEK020). Years 7-8: Analyse how motion, force, and energy are used to manipulate and control electromechanical systems (ACTDEK031).
STEM F-10: This kit directly addresses the cross-curriculum priority of applying knowledge and skills from science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to solve real-world problems.
Coding Platform
No coding required. This kit focuses on hands-on construction and optical science, making it accessible for all classrooms without the need for digital programming skills.
What's in the Box
Each DIY Slide Projector Wooden Puzzle Kit includes precision-cut wooden puzzle pieces for the projector body, a convex lens with a focal length of approximately 100mm, a lens holder, a sliding mechanism for focus adjustment, a screen holder, a set of pre-printed slide templates, assembly instructions, and a teacher guide with curriculum links. Additional materials such as a light source (e.g., a torch or smartphone flashlight) and a white surface for projection are required but not included.
Classroom Setup & Requirements
Each kit is designed for individual or pair work. A standard classroom desk or table provides sufficient space for assembly and testing. A darkened room or dimmable environment is recommended for optimal projection visibility. Teachers should have access to a light source (e.g., a torch or a smartphone flashlight) and a plain white wall or screen for projection. Assembly takes approximately 45–60 minutes, with additional time for experimentation and discussion. No specialised tools are required; all pieces fit together with interlocking joints. The kit is reusable and can be disassembled for storage.
