What Students Will Learn

This DIY Slime Making Science Kit introduces students to the fundamentals of polymer chemistry and material science through hands-on experimentation. Learners will explore concepts such as viscosity, cross-linking, and states of matter by creating their own non-Newtonian fluids. The kit encourages scientific inquiry, observation, and recording of results, while also developing fine motor skills and following procedural instructions. Students will learn to predict, test, and modify variables to achieve different slime textures and properties.

Who It's For

Designed for students in Years 3 to 8, this kit is ideal for primary and early secondary classrooms. It aligns with Science and STEM learning areas and can be integrated into cross-curricular activities including Design and Technologies and Mathematics. Suitable for individual, pair, or small group work, the kit supports differentiated instruction and is accessible for students with varying levels of prior science knowledge.

Australian Curriculum Links

Science (F-10):
- Year 3: A change of state between solid and liquid can be caused by adding or removing heat (ACSSU046)
- Year 4: Natural and processed materials have a range of physical properties that can influence their use (ACSSU074)
- Year 5: Solids, liquids and gases have different observable properties and behave in different ways (ACSSU077)
- Year 6: Changes to materials can be reversible or irreversible (ACSSU095)
- Year 7: Mixtures, including solutions, contain a combination of pure substances that can be separated using a range of techniques (ACSSU113)
- Year 8: Properties of the different states of matter can be explained in terms of the motion and arrangement of particles (ACSSU151)

Digital Technologies (F-10):
- Years 3–4: Collect, access and present different types of data using simple software to create information and solve problems (ACTDIP009)
- Years 5–6: Acquire, store and validate different types of data, and use a range of software to interpret and visualise data (ACTDIP016)

STEM F-10 Integrated:
- Apply scientific knowledge to solve real-world problems through design processes
- Use measurement and data collection to inform decision-making and modification of procedures

Coding Platform

No coding required. This product focuses on hands-on scientific experimentation and observation, making it an ideal entry point for students who may not yet have experience with digital technologies or coding.
