What Students Will Learn
This DIY Soap Making Science Kit introduces students to fundamental chemistry concepts through a hands-on, creative process. Learners will explore saponification, the chemical reaction between fats and an alkali, and understand the roles of different ingredients in soap formulation. The kit encourages scientific inquiry, measurement precision, and observation of physical and chemical changes. Additionally, students develop design thinking and artistic expression by customising colours, scents, and shapes, linking STEM principles with real-world product design.
Who It's For
Designed for primary and lower secondary students, this kit is suitable for Years 3 to 8. It aligns with Science, Design and Technologies, and STEM F-10 curriculum areas. The content is adaptable for classroom science lessons, after-school STEAM clubs, and integrated project-based learning units.
Australian Curriculum Links
This product directly supports the Australian Curriculum: Science (Chemical Sciences) for Years 3–8, covering content descriptions such as ACSSU046 (natural and processed materials), ACSSU095 (chemical change), and ACSSU225 (properties of substances). It also addresses Design and Technologies outcomes including ACTDEK013 (principles of food and fibre production) and ACTDEP017 (generating and communicating design ideas). For STEM F-10, the kit supports cross-curricular capabilities in critical and creative thinking, ethical understanding, and personal and social capability through collaborative experimentation.
Coding Platform
No coding required. This kit focuses on hands-on chemistry and design activities, making it accessible for students who are not yet familiar with coding or digital technologies.
What's in the Box
The kit includes: 500g clear glycerin soap base, 100ml liquid colouring set (5 colours), 50ml fragrance oil set (3 scents), 10 silicone moulds (various shapes), 1 pack of measuring spoons, 1 pipette, 1 mixing bowl, 1 stirring stick, 1 set of instruction cards with step-by-step visuals, and a teacher guide with curriculum mapping and extension activity ideas.
