What Students Will Learn

Students explore the chemistry of saponification, the process of turning fats and oils into soap. The kit introduces key scientific concepts including chemical reactions, pH balance, and the properties of acids and bases. Learners also develop practical skills in measurement, mixing, and safe laboratory practices. By customising their soap with colours and fragrances, students engage with the design process and creative problem-solving.

Suitable for students in Years 3 to 8. Aligned with primary and lower secondary Science, Design and Technologies, and STEM elective subjects. Ideal for classroom science experiments, after-school STEM clubs, and home-school learning environments.

Australian Curriculum Links

Science (F-10): Addresses content descriptors in Chemical Sciences, including ACSSU046 (Year 4: natural and processed materials), ACSSU095 (Year 7: mixtures and separation), and ACSSU225 (Year 8: chemical change). Supports inquiry skills such as planning investigations, recording observations, and communicating findings.

Design and Technologies (F-10): Links to ACTDEK010 (Year 3-4: materials and technologies) and ACTDEP025 (Year 5-6: producing designed solutions). Students apply the design process to create a functional product.

Classroom Setup & Requirements

Requires a heat source (microwave or hot plate) and access to running water. Recommended for groups of 2-4 students working collaboratively. Each kit contains enough materials for up to 8 individual soap creations. Ensure adequate ventilation when using fragrances. Adult supervision is required. Preparation time is approximately 15 minutes; activity time is 45-60 minutes.
