What Students Will Learn

This DIY Solar System Planet Painting Toy introduces students to the scale, order, and visual characteristics of our solar system. Through hands-on assembly and painting, learners explore planetary features, relative sizes, and orbital positions. The activity reinforces fine motor skills, colour recognition, and creative expression while building foundational knowledge in astronomy and space science. Students will also develop an understanding of how models are used in science to represent complex systems.

Who It's For

This product is designed for students in Foundation to Year 6, with particular relevance to Years 1–4. It supports learning in Science, Visual Arts, and cross-curricular STEM projects. The activity can be adapted for individual or small group work, making it suitable for classroom centres, science rotations, or home-based learning.

Australian Curriculum Links

Science (F–6):

  • Foundation: Daily and seasonal changes in our environment (ACSSU004).
  • Year 1: Observable changes in the sky and landscape (ACSSU019).
  • Year 3: Earth’s rotation on its axis causes regular changes (ACSSU048).
  • Year 5: The Earth is part of a system of planets orbiting around a star (ACSSU078).

STEM F–10: This activity aligns with the STEM capability by integrating Science understanding with Design and Technologies processes, encouraging students to create, test, and refine a model.

Visual Arts: Students explore colour, form, and representation (ACAVAM106, ACAVAM108).

Coding Platform

No coding required. This is a hands-on, screen-free activity focused on model-making and creative learning.

  • Paint set with 8 non-toxic, washable colours
  • Paintbrush set (3 brushes of different sizes)
  • Orbital ring or stand for display
