What Students Will Learn

This DIY Wooden Flashlight STEM Learning Toy introduces students to fundamental electrical circuits, energy transfer, and practical engineering design. Through hands-on assembly, learners explore how a simple circuit powers an LED, understand the role of conductors and insulators, and develop problem-solving skills by troubleshooting their own builds. The activity also fosters fine motor skills and sequential thinking, making it an ideal entry point into STEM concepts.

Who It's For

Designed for students in Years 3 to 6, this product aligns with primary school STEM and science curricula. It is particularly suited to classroom activities in Science, Design and Technologies, and cross-curricular STEM programs. The hands-on nature of the build supports diverse learning styles and can be adapted for extension or support as needed.

Australian Curriculum Links

This product directly supports the Australian Curriculum F-10 in Science and Technologies. In Science, it addresses the Physical Sciences strand for Years 4–6, focusing on electrical circuits, energy transfer, and the behaviour of electrical components. For Design and Technologies, it covers Processes and Production Skills, including designing, assembling, and evaluating a functional product. Key curriculum outcomes include:

  • Science: ACSSU097 (electrical energy can be transferred and transformed)
  • Science: ACSHE100 (science knowledge helps people understand the effect of their actions)
  • Technologies: ACTDEK013 (forces and electrical circuits in designed solutions)
  • Technologies: ACTDEP016 (plan, sequence and produce a functioning solution)

Coding Platform

No coding required. This product focuses on electrical and mechanical construction, making it accessible to students without prior programming experience. It provides a foundational understanding of how circuits work before introducing digital components.

What's in the Box

Each kit includes all necessary components to build a complete, working flashlight: pre-cut wooden parts, LED bulb, battery holder, copper wires, switch, screws, and assembly instructions. No additional tools or materials are required for a single build, though teachers may wish to provide small screwdrivers for ease of assembly. The kit is packaged in a resealable bag for easy storage and distribution.

Classroom Setup & Requirements

Each student or pair will need a flat workspace, such as a desk or table, with good lighting. The activity typically takes 30–45 minutes for assembly, with additional time for testing and discussion. No batteries are included, so teachers should supply one AA battery per kit. The build is suitable for individual or group work and can be completed in a single lesson or extended across two sessions for deeper exploration. All components are non-toxic and safe for classroom use.
