What Students Will Learn
Students explore the physics of projectile motion, force, and energy transfer as they build and test a functional wooden pitching machine. This hands-on puzzle develops engineering design thinking, problem-solving skills, and fine motor coordination. Learners will investigate variables such as launch angle, tension, and trajectory, applying scientific inquiry to predict and measure outcomes. The activity also fosters perseverance and collaboration when used in group settings, making it a rich cross-curricular STEM experience.
Who It's For
Designed for students in Years 5 to 9, this product is ideal for Science, Design and Technologies, and STEM elective classes. It supports differentiated learning, with younger students focusing on basic construction and observation, while older students can extend into data collection, graphing, and controlled experimentation. Suitable for classroom, makerspace, or STEM club environments.
Australian Curriculum Links
This product directly supports the Australian Curriculum: Science (Physical Sciences sub-strand) for Years 5–6, where students investigate forces and the effects of energy transfer, and Years 7–8, where they explore motion, speed, and Newton's laws. It also aligns with Design and Technologies (Years 5–8) by engaging students in producing designed solutions, using materials, and evaluating functional outcomes. The STEM F-10 Integrated Curriculum is supported through the application of scientific understanding, mathematical reasoning, and technology processes in a real-world context.
Coding Platform
No coding required. This is a purely mechanical and hands-on STEM activity that focuses on physics principles and engineering design without the need for digital programming. It is an excellent unplugged option for classrooms seeking to build foundational STEM skills away from screens.
What's in the Box
Each kit contains all pre-cut wooden components, rubber bands, axles, screws, and assembly hardware required to build a fully functional pitching machine. Also included are a step-by-step illustrated instruction guide, a student investigation worksheet, and a teacher guide with curriculum mapping, discussion prompts, and extension activity ideas. No additional tools or materials are needed.
Classroom Setup & Requirements
Each student or pair requires a clear workspace of approximately 60 cm x 60 cm. Assembly takes 30–45 minutes, with an additional 30–60 minutes for testing and investigation activities. A safe testing area (e.g., a hallway or outdoor space) is recommended for launching soft projectiles such as ping-pong balls or cotton balls. A tape measure and stopwatch are useful for data collection but not included. The product is designed for low-noise, low-mess classroom use.
