What Students Will Learn

This Educational Smart Robot Car Kit introduces students to foundational concepts in robotics, coding, and engineering design. Through hands-on assembly and programming, students develop computational thinking, problem-solving skills, and an understanding of sensor-based automation. Key learning outcomes include: constructing a functional robot chassis, wiring electronic components such as motors and ultrasonic sensors, interpreting code to control movement and obstacle avoidance, and applying the engineering design process to test, debug, and refine their robot's performance.

Who It's For

Designed for upper primary to lower secondary students, typically Years 5–9. The kit supports subject areas including Digital Technologies, Science (physical sciences and design), and STEM F–10 integrated units. It is suitable for classroom instruction, STEM clubs, and extension activities, with content that can be scaffolded for varying skill levels.

Australian Curriculum Links

This product directly supports the Australian Curriculum: Digital Technologies (Years 5–8) by enabling students to define problems, design algorithms, and implement code to control hardware. It also addresses Science (Years 5–8) outcomes related to forces, energy transfer, and the use of sensors. In STEM F–10, the kit facilitates cross-disciplinary projects that integrate design thinking, data collection, and iterative testing.

Coding Platform

Students program the robot using a block-based coding environment (compatible with Scratch and Arduino IDE for text-based coding). No prior coding experience is required, and the platform supports both graphical and C++ coding, allowing progression from beginner to intermediate levels. The kit includes step-by-step tutorials and example programs.

What's in the Box

The kit includes: 1x Arduino-compatible microcontroller board, 1x robot car chassis with wheels and motors, 1x ultrasonic distance sensor, 1x infrared remote control, 1x battery holder (requires 4x AA batteries, not included), 1x USB programming cable, 1x screwdriver, and a full set of screws and connectors. A printed assembly guide and online access to coding tutorials and curriculum maps are also provided.

Classroom Setup & Requirements

Each kit is designed for individual or pair work. Students will need access to a computer with a USB port and internet connection for the coding platform. Assembly requires a clean, flat surface and takes approximately 45–60 minutes for first-time builders. The robot operates on a hard, level floor. No soldering is required. Teachers should allocate at least two 60-minute sessions for completion and testing.
