Electric Parking Gate Science Kit
What Students Will Learn
Students explore the principles of mechanical engineering, electronics, and control systems by building a working model of an automatic parking gate. They will learn about gear mechanisms, motor control, sensor inputs, and the logic behind real-world automated barriers. The kit introduces fundamental concepts in force, motion, and energy transfer while developing problem-solving and design thinking skills. Through hands-on construction and testing, students gain practical understanding of how STEM principles apply to everyday infrastructure.
Who It's For
Designed for students in Years 5 to 8. Ideal for Science, Digital Technologies, and STEM electives. Suitable for classroom instruction, STEM clubs, and extension activities. The kit supports both introductory and more advanced learners with scaffolded challenges.
Australian Curriculum Links
This kit directly supports the Australian Curriculum: Science (physical sciences – forces, energy), Digital Technologies (designing algorithms, controlling devices), and STEM F-10 (engineering design processes). Specific content descriptors include: ACSSU117 (forces), ACTDEK019 (designed solutions), ACTDIP020 (digital systems), and ACTDEK029 (motion and control). Teachers can easily map activities to their year-level curriculum requirements.
Coding Platform
No coding required. The kit operates using a simple push-button and motor circuit, allowing students to focus on mechanical and electrical principles without programming. For extension, teachers may integrate external microcontrollers (not included) to add automated sensor-based control, but this is optional and not needed for core activities.
What's in the Box
Each kit contains: pre-cut wooden parts for gate and base, DC motor with gearbox, battery holder, wires, push-button switch, screws, nuts, and assembly tools. Includes a full-colour instruction booklet with diagrams and classroom activity guide. All components are reusable and designed for multiple builds.
Classroom Setup & Requirements
Requires 2 x AA batteries (not included). Assembly time is approximately 40–60 minutes per kit. Recommended for groups of 2–3 students. No specialist tools needed. A clear workspace and basic supervision are sufficient. The kit is designed for easy clean-up and storage. For whole-class use, order one kit per group.
