What Students Will Learn

This Electronic FM Radio Kit provides a hands-on introduction to analogue and digital electronics. Students will learn to identify and solder components including resistors, capacitors, transistors, integrated circuits, and a tuning display module. The project reinforces understanding of radio frequency (RF) circuits, frequency modulation (FM) principles, and the function of a superheterodyne receiver. By constructing and testing their own working FM radio, students develop soldering technique, circuit reading skills, troubleshooting methods, and an appreciation for real-world applications of STEM theory.

Who It's For

Designed for secondary school students in Years 7–10, this kit is ideal for Digital Technologies, Science, and STEM elective classes. It is suitable for beginner to intermediate soldering levels, with clear instructions supporting first-time users. The project can be completed individually or in pairs, making it flexible for class sizes and skill ranges.

Australian Curriculum Links

This kit directly addresses outcomes in the Australian Curriculum for Digital Technologies (ACARA), Science, and the STEM F–10 framework. Key content descriptors include: AC9TDI8P03 (investigating how data is transmitted as signals), AC9S8U04 (energy transfer and electrical circuits), and AC9S9U06 (wave properties and communication technologies). It also supports STEM capabilities such as systems thinking, design processes, and applied problem-solving. Teachers can align the project with units on electronics, energy, and digital systems.

Coding Platform

No coding required. This is a pure electronics and soldering project focused on circuit construction and RF principles. For extension, students can research how digital tuning displays interface with microcontroller systems.

What's in the Box

Each kit includes: pre-cut PCB board with silkscreen labels, FM receiver IC, tuning capacitor, variable resistor, resistors (all values), capacitors (ceramic and electrolytic), transistors, diodes, LED tuning indicator, speaker, battery holder (requires 3x AA batteries – not included), antenna wire, and a full-colour instruction booklet with circuit diagram. All components are RoHS compliant and selected for classroom durability.

Classroom Setup & Requirements

Each student or pair requires a soldering iron (25–40W recommended), solder (lead-free preferred), side cutters, and a small Phillips head screwdriver. A well-ventilated area with soldering stations is advised. The project takes approximately 4–6 class sessions (45–60 minutes each) to complete. No specialist RF test equipment is needed; a simple multimeter can assist troubleshooting. Teachers should have basic soldering familiarity to guide initial steps. A class set of 10–20 kits is recommended for manageable instruction.

Support & Warranty

Every Electronic FM Radio Kit is backed by a 12-month warranty against manufacturing defects. Stemology provides free technical support via email at admin@stemology.com.au. Our team can assist with circuit queries, replacement parts, and classroom troubleshooting. Replacement components are available for purchase individually if needed.
