What Students Will Learn
Students gain foundational skills in programming, robotics, and systems thinking by controlling an interactive robot dog. They explore cause-and-effect relationships through movement commands, sensor inputs, and autonomous behaviours. Key learning outcomes include understanding sequence, selection, and iteration in coding; applying computational thinking to solve real-world problems; and developing an awareness of how sensors (such as infrared and touch) enable machines to interact with their environment. This hands-on tool also encourages collaboration, problem-solving, and creative design as students experiment with different programs to make the robot dog walk, sit, bark, or respond to obstacles.
Who It's For
Designed for primary and lower secondary students (Years 3–8), this programmable robot dog is ideal for Digital Technologies, Design and Technologies, and STEM electives. It supports differentiated learning from basic block-based coding for beginners to more advanced text-based programming for experienced students. The product is also suitable for classroom makerspaces, robotics clubs, and cross-curricular STEM challenges.
Australian Curriculum Links
Aligned with the Australian Curriculum: Digital Technologies (F–10) and Science (F–10), this resource directly supports content descriptors such as: ACTDIK001 (recognising patterns in data), ACTDIP003 (following and describing simple algorithms), ACTDIP010 (designing algorithms involving sequence and selection), ACTDIP019 (implementing and modifying programs with user input), and ACSSU097 (forces and motion in physical sciences). It also addresses general capabilities in critical and creative thinking, ICT, and ethical understanding when discussing the role of robots in society.
Coding Platform
This robot dog is programmable using a free, web-based coding platform that supports both block-based (drag-and-drop) and JavaScript/Python text coding. No software installation is required – simply connect via USB or Bluetooth to a Windows, macOS, or Chromebook device. The platform includes tutorial projects, sample code, and a virtual simulator for testing programs before uploading to the robot. No prior coding experience is needed for teachers or students.
What's in the Box
- 1x Interactive Robot Dog (pre-assembled, rechargeable battery included)
- 1x USB charging cable
- 1x Remote control (for manual operation without coding)
- 1x Quick-start guide and curriculum activity booklet
- Access to online lesson plans and coding tutorials
Classroom Setup & Requirements
Each robot dog requires a compatible device (Chromebook, Windows laptop, or Mac) with internet access for coding. The robot operates on a flat, clear surface (desk or floor) of at least 1 square metre per group. Recommended for groups of 2–3 students per robot. Charging time is approximately 60 minutes for up to 90 minutes of continuous use. No additional sensors or accessories are required for the included activities. Teachers should ensure devices have Bluetooth or USB connectivity as per the coding platform requirements.
