What Students Will Learn

Students will explore the principles of smart agriculture and IoT (Internet of Things) by building a functioning farm monitoring and automation system. Key learning outcomes include understanding sensor data collection (temperature, humidity, soil moisture), wireless data transmission via ESP-NOW or Wi-Fi, and basic automation logic (e.g., activating a pump when soil is dry). The kit introduces fundamental concepts in electronics, programming, and systems thinking, enabling students to design, test, and troubleshoot real-world IoT solutions.

Who It's For

Designed for Years 7–10 students in Digital Technologies, Science, and STEM elective subjects. The kit is ideal for classroom investigations into data acquisition, control systems, and the engineering design process. It supports both introductory and intermediate learners, with scaffolded activities that can be adapted for differentiated learning.

Australian Curriculum Links

This resource directly supports the Australian Curriculum: Digital Technologies (Years 7–8: design algorithms, implement simple programs; Years 9–10: develop modular programs, manage data). It also aligns with Science (Years 7–8: science inquiry skills, use of digital technologies to collect data) and STEM F-10 (design thinking, systems thinking, and creating solutions for real-world problems). Teachers can map activities to relevant content descriptors for their year level.

Coding Platform

Students program the ESP32 board using the Arduino IDE (C++ based) or the block-based coding platform Mixly. Both are free, widely supported, and suitable for classroom use. The kit includes step-by-step guides for both platforms, allowing teachers to choose the most appropriate level of abstraction for their students.

What's in the Box

Each kit contains: 1x ESP32 development board with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, 1x soil moisture sensor, 1x DHT11 temperature/humidity sensor, 1x relay module, 1x mini water pump, 1x LCD1602 display module, 1x joystick module, 2x LEDs and resistors, jumper wires, USB cable, breadboard, and a comprehensive printed guide with 10+ project tutorials. All components are pre-tested and packaged for easy classroom distribution.

Classroom Setup & Requirements

Each student or pair requires a computer (Windows, Mac, or Linux) with internet access for downloading the Arduino IDE or Mixly software. No soldering is required—all connections are made using jumper wires and a breadboard. A stable Wi-Fi network is recommended for IoT demonstrations. The kit is designed for individual or small-group work, with each project taking 1–2 class periods to complete. Teachers should allocate time for initial setup and testing of software on school devices.
