What Students Will Learn

This Remote Control Gantry Crane DIY Toy introduces students to foundational principles of mechanical engineering, electrical circuits, and structural design. Through hands-on assembly and operation, learners will explore concepts such as gear systems, pulley mechanisms, torque, and remote control functionality. The activity fosters problem-solving skills, fine motor coordination, and an understanding of how real-world cranes operate in logistics and construction environments.

Who It's For

Designed for students in Years 5 to 8, this product aligns with STEM F-10 learning outcomes and is suitable for classroom use in Science, Design and Technologies, and Digital Technologies programs. It is ideal for introductory engineering units, maker spaces, and cross-curricular projects that integrate physical science with technology.

Australian Curriculum Links

This product directly supports the Australian Curriculum: Digital Technologies (processes and production skills, including using digital systems to control devices), Science (physical sciences: forces, motion, and energy transfer), and Design and Technologies (generating and producing designed solutions). Key content descriptors include: ACTDIK001 (recognising and using digital systems), ACSSU117 (forces and motion), and ACTDEK019 (designing and producing mechanical systems).

Coding Platform

No coding required. The gantry crane is operated via a simple remote control interface, allowing students to focus on mechanical assembly and manual control without the need for programming experience. This makes it an accessible entry point for younger or less experienced learners.

What's in the Box

The kit includes pre-cut wooden structural components, a DC motor, gear and pulley set, remote control module with receiver, battery holder, wheels, axles, assembly screws and nuts, a hook and string mechanism, and a step-by-step illustrated instruction guide. No additional tools or batteries are required beyond those provided (batteries included).

Classroom Setup & Requirements

Each kit requires a flat workspace of approximately 60 cm x 60 cm for assembly. Recommended for individual or paired work. Assembly time is 60 to 90 minutes. The finished crane measures 35 cm in height and 25 cm in width, suitable for tabletop demonstration. Teachers should provide basic supervision for screw assembly and motor connections. No soldering or specialist equipment is needed.
