What Students Will Learn

This Robot Spider Mech Warrior Building Toy introduces students to foundational concepts in mechanical engineering, robotics, and systems thinking. Through hands-on assembly, learners explore gear mechanisms, motorised movement, and structural design. The build process develops problem-solving skills, spatial reasoning, and fine motor coordination. Once constructed, students can test and modify the mech's walking motion, encouraging iterative design and experimentation. Key learning outcomes include understanding how gears and linkages convert motor rotation into limb movement, and applying basic physics principles such as balance and torque.

Who It's For

Designed for students in Years 3 to 8, this product is suitable for primary and lower secondary classrooms. It aligns with subject areas including Design and Technologies, Digital Technologies, Science (Physical Sciences), and STEM F-10. The kit supports differentiated learning, with younger students focusing on assembly and observation, while older students can extend into programming (if using optional coding modules) or engineering analysis.

Australian Curriculum Links

This product directly supports the Australian Curriculum: Digital Technologies (ACTDIK001, ACTDIP006, ACTDIP010) and Design and Technologies (ACTDEK010, ACTDEK013, ACTDEK023). In Science F-10, it addresses Physical Sciences content descriptions around forces, motion, and energy transfer (ACSSU076, ACSSU117). The STEM F-10 integrated approach is reinforced through cross-curricular problem-solving, design thinking, and application of mathematics in measuring and comparing movement. Teachers can map the build activity to specific year-level achievement standards for reporting purposes.

Coding Platform

No coding required. The Robot Spider Mech Warrior operates using a pre-configured motor and gear system, making it accessible for classrooms without prior programming experience. For schools seeking to extend the activity, an optional coding module (sold separately) can be integrated to control movement via a block-based platform such as Scratch or MakeCode, introducing students to basic commands and sequences.

What's in the Box

Each kit includes: pre-cut and pre-drilled mechanical frame components, a high-torque DC motor, gear and axle set, eight articulated legs with rubberised grips, battery holder (requires 2 x AA batteries, not included), screws and assembly tools, and a full-colour instruction booklet. All parts are reusable and designed for classroom durability. No soldering or specialised tools are required.

Classroom Setup & Requirements

Each kit supports one student or a pair working collaboratively. Recommended workspace: a flat desk or table with good lighting. Estimated build time: 45 to 60 minutes for first-time builders, with faster times on subsequent uses. Batteries are required for operation (2 x AA per kit). No internet connection or software installation is needed for the basic mechanical build. For optional coding extension, a device with USB port and internet access is required. The product is designed for indoor use on smooth, flat surfaces. Storage in a dry, cool environment is recommended to maintain component integrity.
