Simulated Rocket Launch STEM Toy

What Students Will Learn

This hands-on STEM toy immerses students in the engineering design process, systems thinking, and physics principles behind a simulated rocket launch. Through iterative build-and-test cycles, students explore concepts such as thrust, trajectory, gravity, and payload. The activity fosters problem-solving, data collection and analysis, and collaborative teamwork. Students also develop foundational skills in sequencing and cause-and-effect reasoning as they configure launch parameters.

Who It's For

Designed for students in Years 5 to 8. Ideal for Science, Digital Technologies, and STEM elective classes. Suitable for cross-curricular units combining physical sciences with digital systems. The toy is equally effective in specialist STEM labs, general classrooms, and after-school STEM clubs.

Australian Curriculum Links

Aligned to the Australian Curriculum: Science (Physical Sciences sub-strand – forces and motion, energy transfer), Digital Technologies (Designing algorithms, controlling digital systems), and STEM F-10 (Engineering principles and systems). This product supports achievement standards including: planning and conducting investigations, using digital systems to automate processes, and applying design thinking to produce solutions.

Coding Platform

No coding required. The simulated rocket launch is controlled via a physical switch panel and manual adjustment of launch angles and pressure settings. This makes it accessible for students who are new to programming while still delivering core STEM learning outcomes. For extension activities, teachers may integrate optional external data logging tools.

What's in the Box

Each kit includes: 1 launch base with integrated control panel, 1 foam rocket body with interchangeable nose cones, 1 manual air pump with pressure gauge, 1 launch angle guide, 1 set of payload weights, 1 instruction booklet with classroom activity guide, and 1 laminated data recording sheet. All components are durable and designed for repeated classroom use.

Classroom Setup & Requirements

Requires a flat outdoor or large indoor space (minimum 10 metres of clear travel distance). No electrical outlet or computer needed. Recommended for groups of 2 to 4 students per kit. Setup time is under 5 minutes. Teachers should provide safety goggles and supervise all launches. A single kit supports multiple launch cycles per lesson. For whole-class instruction, we recommend one kit per group.
