What Students Will Learn
Students explore the principles of renewable energy, electrical circuits, and energy conversion through hands-on investigation. They will build a fully functional solar generator, learning how photovoltaic cells capture sunlight and convert it into electrical energy. The kit introduces key STEM concepts including voltage, current, power storage, and load management. Students develop practical skills in circuit assembly, troubleshooting, and data collection, while investigating variables that affect energy output such as light intensity and panel angle. This project-based learning experience fosters critical thinking, problem-solving, and an understanding of sustainable technologies.
Who It's For
Designed for students in Years 5 to 9, this kit is suitable for Science, Design and Technologies, and STEM elective classes. It supports differentiated learning and can be used in whole-class instruction, small groups, or independent inquiry projects. The activities align with cross-curricular priorities in sustainability and digital literacy.
Australian Curriculum Links
Science (Years 5–9): ACSSU097 (electrical energy), ACSSU219 (energy transfer), ACSSU155 (energy conservation), ACSIS231 (fair testing and variables).
Design and Technologies (Years 5–9): ACTDEK019 (energy systems), ACTDEK029 (sustainable technologies), ACTDEP025 (project planning and evaluation).
STEM F-10: Develops capabilities in systems thinking, data analysis, and engineering design processes. Supports the Australian Curriculum's sustainability cross-curriculum priority.
Coding Platform
No coding required. This kit focuses on physical circuit construction and energy measurement, making it accessible for students without prior programming experience. Optional extension activities may include data logging using external sensors, but the core project is entirely hands-on.
What's in the Box
Each kit includes: 1 x 5V solar panel, 1 x rechargeable battery pack, 1 x DC motor, 1 x LED light module, 1 x USB output module, 1 x multimeter (basic), 2 x alligator clip leads, 4 x connector wires, 1 x switch module, 1 x base board with mounting slots, 1 x angle stand, and a comprehensive student guide with circuit diagrams and investigation prompts. All components are pre-soldered and modular for easy assembly.
Classroom Setup & Requirements
Requires access to a windowsill or outdoor area with direct sunlight for optimal testing. A single kit is suitable for pairs or small groups of 2–3 students. No soldering or specialist tools needed. Recommended consumables include a notebook for data recording and a stopwatch. For indoor use, a 100W equivalent LED lamp can substitute for sunlight. Storage in a dry, room-temperature environment is recommended.
