What Students Will Learn

Students will explore the principles of renewable energy, mechanical engineering, and energy transfer by constructing a working solar-powered grinding mill. This hands-on project teaches how photovoltaic cells convert sunlight into electrical energy to drive a motor, which then powers a grinding mechanism. Learners will develop problem-solving skills, understand gear systems and torque, and gain practical insight into sustainable technology. The activity also introduces concepts of efficiency, load, and the engineering design process through testing and refinement.

Who It's For

Designed for students in Years 5 to 9, this product aligns with Science, Design and Technologies, and STEM F-10 curricula. It is suitable for classroom use in primary and secondary settings, as well as for extension activities, science clubs, and STEM enrichment programs. The kit supports differentiated learning with opportunities for guided instruction and independent exploration.

Australian Curriculum Links

This product directly supports the Australian Curriculum: Science (ACSSU097 – energy from a variety of sources can be used to generate electricity; ACSSU117 – energy transfer through systems), Design and Technologies (ACTDEK019 – analyse how motion, force and energy are used to manipulate and control electromechanical systems), and STEM F-10 (interdisciplinary problem-solving and application of science and mathematics concepts). It also addresses cross-curriculum priorities of sustainability and critical and creative thinking.

Coding Platform

No coding required. This is a purely mechanical and electrical construction kit, allowing students to focus on hands-on assembly and energy concepts without the need for programming.

What's in the Box

Each kit includes: 1 solar panel module with pre-soldered wires, 1 DC motor, 1 grinding chamber and pestle assembly, 1 set of plastic gears and axles, 1 wooden base frame, 1 set of screws and connectors, 1 instruction booklet with diagrams and curriculum notes. All components are pre-cut and ready for assembly. No additional tools required.

Classroom Setup & Requirements

For optimal performance, set up the solar grinding mill in a well-lit area with direct sunlight or a strong artificial light source (e.g., 100W equivalent LED lamp). Each kit requires approximately 30–45 minutes of assembly time. Recommended group size: 2–3 students per kit. Teachers should have basic safety scissors available for any packaging removal. A whiteboard or projector is useful for demonstrating gear ratios and energy flow diagrams. Ensure clear, flat work surfaces for assembly.
