Solar Powered Car STEM Puzzle Kit

An engaging, hands-on kit that introduces students to renewable energy, mechanical engineering, and problem-solving through the construction of a solar-powered vehicle.

What Students Will Learn

This kit enables students to explore fundamental concepts in renewable energy, specifically solar power, as they build and test their own car. They will develop an understanding of how solar panels convert sunlight into electrical energy to power a motor, and learn about gear ratios, torque, and friction. The puzzle-like assembly process strengthens spatial reasoning, fine motor skills, and iterative problem-solving. Students will also gain practical experience in design thinking, testing variables such as wheel size and weight distribution to optimise performance.

Who It's For

Designed for students in Years 3 to 8, this kit is ideal for primary and lower secondary classrooms. It aligns with Science and Design & Technologies subject areas and is particularly suitable for STEM elective units, sustainability projects, and cross-curricular investigations into energy and motion.

Australian Curriculum Links

This product supports the Australian Curriculum: Science (ACSSU097 – energy from a variety of sources can be used to generate electricity; ACSSU117 – energy appears in different forms including movement and heat) and Design & Technologies (ACTDEK019 – investigate how forces and the properties of materials affect the behaviour of a product; ACTDEP025 – evaluate design ideas and processes). It also connects to the STEM F-10 Integrated Curriculum, particularly the sub-strands of Science Inquiry Skills and Design & Technologies Processes.

Coding Platform

No coding required. This kit focuses on hands-on mechanical construction and energy concepts, making it accessible for students and teachers who are new to electronics or programming.

What's in the Box

Each kit includes a high-efficiency solar panel, a DC motor, pre-cut wooden chassis parts, plastic gears, wheels, axles, screws, and a detailed instruction booklet. All components are designed for easy assembly and reuse, with no soldering or additional tools required. The solar panel connects directly to the motor, allowing immediate testing in sunlight or under a strong desk lamp.

Classroom Setup & Requirements

This kit requires no batteries or external power source. For best results, use in a well-lit area with direct sunlight or a 100W+ incandescent lamp. Each kit can be assembled by an individual student or a pair in approximately 45–60 minutes. Minimal desk space is needed, and a few basic tools such as scissors or a small screwdriver may be helpful but are not essential. The kit is robust enough for repeated assembly and disassembly across multiple lessons.
