STEM Ball Track Kit – Wooden Marble Run Building Toy
What Students Will Learn
This hands-on STEM Ball Track Kit introduces students to fundamental principles of physics, engineering, and design thinking. As they construct marble runs from precision-cut wooden pieces, learners explore concepts including gravity, potential and kinetic energy, momentum, friction, and cause-and-effect relationships. The iterative building process develops problem-solving skills, spatial reasoning, and perseverance. Students will also gain practical experience with the engineering design cycle: plan, build, test, evaluate, and improve. Collaborative group work encourages communication, teamwork, and peer feedback.
Who It's For
Designed for students in Years 3–8, this kit is suitable for primary and lower secondary classrooms. It aligns with subject areas including Science, Design and Technologies, Digital Technologies, and Mathematics. The open-ended nature of the kit allows differentiation for a wide range of abilities, making it ideal for STEM clubs, extension activities, and integrated curriculum units.
Australian Curriculum Links
Science (F–10): Physical sciences – exploring forces, motion, and energy transfer (ACSSU076, ACSSU117). Science inquiry skills – planning and conducting investigations, analysing data (ACSIS087, ACSIS140).
Design and Technologies: Processes and production skills – generating, developing, and evaluating design ideas (ACTDEP014, ACTDEP025). Knowledge and understanding – selecting and using materials, tools, and equipment (ACTDEK013, ACTDEK023).
Digital Technologies: Data representation – recognising patterns and sequences (ACTDIK007). Computational thinking – breaking down problems into steps and testing solutions (ACTDIP010, ACTDIP017).
STEM F–10 Integrated: Supports cross-disciplinary STEM learning objectives, including critical and creative thinking, ethical understanding, and personal and social capability.
Coding Platform
No coding required. This is a purely hands-on, screen-free STEM activity that focuses on physical construction and scientific exploration. For teachers wishing to extend learning, optional digital extensions (e.g., measuring angles, graphing marble speed) can be integrated using classroom devices.
What's in the Box
Each kit includes:
- 60+ precision-cut wooden track pieces (straights, curves, ramps, and connectors)
- 4 wooden marbles
- 2 base boards for stable construction
- 1 set of support pillars and brackets
- 1 detailed teacher guide with curriculum links and lesson ideas
- 1 set of student challenge cards (6 levels of difficulty)
- 1 storage box with compartments
All wooden components are sustainably sourced and finished with non-toxic, child-safe materials.
Classroom Setup & Requirements
Minimal setup required. Each kit operates independently with no need for power, batteries, or digital devices. Recommended for groups of 2–4 students per kit. A clear, flat surface (desk or table) approximately 60cm x 80cm is sufficient for construction. For larger classes, multiple kits can be used simultaneously. Storage is compact with the included box. Teachers should allow 10–15 minutes for initial demonstration and safety briefing. Activities can be completed in single 45–60 minute sessions or extended over multiple lessons.
