What Students Will Learn
This hands-on building set introduces students to foundational concepts in mechanical engineering, physics, and systems thinking. Through constructing motorized spinning blocks and a rail car, learners explore gear ratios, torque, motion transfer, and the relationship between energy input and output. The kit promotes problem-solving, iterative design, and collaborative teamwork as students test and modify their creations to achieve specific movements and speeds.
Who It's For
Designed for students in Years 3 to 8, this product is ideal for classroom use in Science, Digital Technologies, and Design and Technologies. It supports STEM F-10 integration and can be used in dedicated STEM blocks, makerspace activities, or cross-curricular projects linking mathematics and engineering principles.
Australian Curriculum Links
This resource directly supports the Australian Curriculum: Science (ACSSU076 – forces and motion; ACSSU117 – energy transfer), Digital Technologies (ACTDIK008 – data representation and systems), and Design and Technologies (ACTDEP025 – generating and communicating design ideas). It also aligns with STEM F-10 capabilities, including critical and creative thinking, and ethical understanding through resource management and design evaluation.
Coding Platform
No coding required. This set focuses on mechanical construction and manual operation, making it accessible for students who are new to STEM concepts or for classrooms without digital devices. Teachers can optionally extend the activity by integrating simple coding challenges using additional components (not included).
What's in the Box
The kit includes: 1 motorized base unit, 1 rail car chassis, 1 set of interlocking building blocks (60+ pieces), 2 spinning block modules, 1 set of gears (small, medium, large), 1 axle set, 1 battery pack (requires 2 AA batteries, not included), 1 instruction booklet with 3 build challenges, and 1 storage container. All components are durable, reusable, and designed for repeated classroom use.
Classroom Setup & Requirements
Each kit is designed for 2-4 students working in small groups. A clear, flat workspace of approximately 1m x 0.5m per group is recommended. Batteries are required (2x AA per kit, not included). No additional tools or software are needed. The set is low-maintenance and can be easily stored in the included container. For larger classes, multiple kits can be used simultaneously to foster collaboration and competition.
