What Students Will Learn

This Telegraph Machine Science Craft Kit introduces students to the foundational principles of electrical circuits and communication technology. Students will build a working telegraph machine, exploring how electrical signals transmit messages over distances. Key learning outcomes include understanding closed and open circuits, the role of switches and electromagnets, and the historical context of telegraphy. The hands-on activity fosters problem-solving skills, fine motor coordination, and an appreciation for how STEM innovations shape modern communication systems.

Who It's For

Designed for students in Years 4 to 8, this kit is ideal for cross-curricular learning in Science, Digital Technologies, and Design and Technologies. It is particularly suited to classroom units exploring electricity, energy transfer, and information systems. Teachers in primary and lower secondary settings will find it adaptable for individual or small-group work, with clear links to STEM-focused inquiry and project-based learning.

Australian Curriculum Links

This kit directly supports the Australian Curriculum: Science (ACSSU097 – electrical circuits and energy transfer), Digital Technologies (ACTDIK001 – how data is represented and transmitted), and Design and Technologies (ACTDEK023 – designing solutions for communication needs). It also aligns with the STEM F-10 framework, encouraging students to apply scientific understanding, technological design, and mathematical reasoning to solve real-world problems. Teachers can use the kit to address multiple content descriptors in a single engaging activity.

Coding Platform

No coding required. This kit focuses on physical circuit construction and manual operation, making it accessible for students without prior programming experience. It provides a tactile introduction to electrical systems before advancing to digital coding activities.

What's in the Box

Each kit contains: 1 wooden base board, 1 electromagnet coil assembly, 2 metal contact switches, 1 battery holder (AA batteries not included), 1 set of insulated connecting wires, 1 metal striker arm, 1 instruction booklet with circuit diagrams and historical notes, and all necessary screws, nuts, and mounting hardware. Components are pre-cut and ready for assembly, with no additional tools required.

Classroom Setup & Requirements

Each kit requires 2 x AA batteries and a flat work surface for assembly. Recommended for groups of 2–3 students to encourage collaboration. No specialised equipment is needed; basic classroom tools such as a small Phillips-head screwdriver may assist but are not essential. Setup time is approximately 30–45 minutes, with additional time for testing and experimentation. The kit is durable and reusable for multiple class periods.
