What Students Will Learn

This hands-on kit introduces students to the principles of robotics, sensor technology, and autonomous navigation. Students will construct a functional trolley that uses ultrasonic sensors to detect and avoid obstacles, developing understanding of how real-world systems such as autonomous vehicles and warehouse robots operate. Key learning outcomes include: understanding ultrasonic sensor operation (emission and echo timing), programming conditional logic for decision-making, applying the engineering design process to build and test a chassis, and troubleshooting hardware and software integration. The project reinforces concepts in physics (sound waves, distance measurement), mathematics (measurement, data analysis), and design thinking.

Who It's For

Designed for students in Years 5–10, this kit is suitable for classroom STEM programs, after-school robotics clubs, and enrichment activities. It aligns with subject areas including Digital Technologies, Science (Physical Sciences), Design and Technologies, and cross-curricular STEM F–10 projects. The complexity of coding and construction can be scaled for different year levels, making it adaptable for both introductory and more advanced learners.

Australian Curriculum Links

This product directly supports the Australian Curriculum: Digital Technologies (years 5–10) by enabling students to design, modify, and follow algorithms involving sequences, branching, and iteration. It addresses Science (Physical Sciences) content descriptions related to forces, motion, and the properties of sound waves. The kit also aligns with Design and Technologies outcomes in generating and producing designed solutions, and with STEM F–10 capabilities such as critical and creative thinking, collaboration, and ethical understanding of technology in society.

Coding Platform

This kit is programmed using the Arduino IDE (C++ based). A familiar, text-based environment widely used in education and industry. Students will write and upload code to control the ultrasonic sensor, motor drivers, and logic for obstacle avoidance. Pre-written example code and step-by-step guides are included to support beginners, while advanced students can modify parameters and extend functionality.

What's in the Box

Each kit contains: 1 x Arduino-compatible microcontroller board, 1 x ultrasonic sensor module (HC-SR04), 1 x motor driver board (L298N or equivalent), 2 x DC motors with wheels, 1 x acrylic or wooden chassis frame, 1 x battery holder (for 6–9V power), 1 x USB programming cable, 1 x screwdriver and assorted screws, 1 x set of jumper wires, and 1 x instruction manual with wiring diagrams and coding examples. All components are pre-tested and classroom-ready.

Classroom Setup & Requirements

Each kit requires one computer (Windows, Mac, or Chromebook) with the Arduino IDE installed (free download). A flat, open space of approximately 2m x 2m is recommended for testing obstacle avoidance. Students will need basic tools (included) and access to 4 x AA batteries (not included). The kit can be assembled in 60–90 minutes and programmed in a further 45–60 minutes. We recommend one kit per 2–3 students for collaborative learning. No prior soldering or electronics experience is required.

Support & Warranty

All Stemology kits are backed by a 12-month warranty against manufacturing defects. If any component fails under normal classroom use, we will replace it free of charge. Technical support is available via email at admin@stemology.com.au. Our team can assist with troubleshooting, coding questions, and classroom implementation advice.

Bulk & School Orders

We offer tiered bulk pricing for orders of 10+ kits, with additional discounts for 20+ and 50+ units. Purchase orders from schools and educational institutions are welcome. To request a quote or discuss custom bundles (e.g., class sets with spare parts), email admin@stemology.com.au or contact your local education distributor. All orders include free delivery within Australia for orders over $500 AUD.
