What Students Will Learn

This hands-on wooden traffic light model introduces students to fundamental STEM concepts including electrical circuits, sequential logic, and systems thinking. By constructing a functioning traffic light, learners explore how series and parallel circuits operate, understand the role of resistors and LEDs, and develop problem-solving skills through troubleshooting. The activity promotes an understanding of real-world applications of electronics and automation, encouraging students to connect classroom theory with everyday technology.

Who It's For

Designed for primary and lower secondary students in Years 3 to 8, this product is ideal for subject areas including Digital Technologies, Science, and STEM F-10 integrated units. It supports differentiated learning, making it suitable for both introductory electronics lessons and more advanced explorations of control systems.

Australian Curriculum Links

This product directly supports the Australian Curriculum: Digital Technologies (ACARA) for Years 3-8, particularly the strands of Digital Systems and Processes and Production Skills. It aligns with Science Understanding outcomes in Electrical Energy (ACSSU097) and Science as a Human Endeavour. For STEM F-10, it provides a tangible context for design thinking, systems engineering, and the application of mathematics in measuring time intervals and sequencing.

Coding Platform

No coding required. This is a hardware-only model that teaches circuit construction and logic without the need for programming. It is an excellent introductory tool before moving to programmable platforms such as micro:bit or Arduino.

What's in the Box

Each kit includes: pre-cut wooden base and traffic light housing, 3 x LED lights (red, amber, green), resistors, battery holder with switch, connecting wires, screws and mounting hardware, step-by-step illustrated instructions. All components are non-toxic and designed for repeated classroom use.

Classroom Setup & Requirements

Requires 2 x AA batteries (not included). Each student or pair will need a small workspace with access to a flat surface. Assembly takes approximately 30-45 minutes. No soldering is required; all connections are made via screw terminals or spring clips. Suitable for individual or group work, with easy-to-follow instructions that minimise teacher preparation time.
