Students will explore the properties of three-dimensional shapes through hands-on, visual play on a light table. This resource builds spatial awareness, geometric reasoning, and early understanding of vertices, edges, faces, and symmetry. Learners will classify and compare shapes such as cubes, spheres, pyramids, and prisms, while developing vocabulary for describing geometric features. The translucent design encourages observation of light and shadow, linking geometry concepts to scientific inquiry about materials and light transmission.
Designed for Foundation to Year 6 students, this product supports mathematics and science learning in primary classrooms. It is particularly suitable for early years educators introducing 2D-to-3D shape relationships, and for upper primary teachers reinforcing nets, volume, and cross-sections. Ideal for use in STEM rotations, maths centres, or specialist science lessons.
Mathematics (F-6): Aligns with content descriptions for shape and space, including recognising and classifying 3D objects (ACMMG009, ACMMG043, ACMMG063, ACMMG111). Students identify and describe geometric features, compare shapes, and explore nets and cross-sections.
Science (F-6): Supports inquiry into light and materials (ACSSU080), as students observe how translucent shapes interact with light sources. Encourages questioning and predicting (ACSIS014, ACSIS024, ACSIS037).
STEM F-10: Integrates design thinking and problem-solving when students use shapes to model real-world structures or create patterns. Promotes cross-curricular learning in digital technologies when recording observations using digital tools.
No coding required. This product is a hands-on, unplugged resource for tactile and visual exploration of geometry and light.
Set includes 24 translucent geometric shapes made from durable, child-safe acrylic. Shapes include cubes, rectangular prisms, triangular prisms, hexagonal prisms, square pyramids, triangular pyramids (tetrahedrons), cylinders, cones, and spheres. Each shape measures approximately 4-8 cm in length, ideal for small hands. Also includes a teacher guide with suggested activities and curriculum links.
Requires a light table or light panel (not included) for optimal effect. Can also be used on a window or with a torch in a dimmed room. Suitable for individual, pair, or small group work (up to 4 students per set). Minimal additional materials needed; paper and pencils for recording observations. Store shapes in a dry, flat container to avoid scratches.
