What Students Will Learn
Students engage with the engineering design process, orbital mechanics, and renewable energy concepts by assembling a functional 3D solar-powered satellite model. They develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and technical literacy as they integrate photovoltaic panels, structural components, and basic circuitry. The kit fosters an understanding of satellite subsystems, including power generation, data transmission, and orientation, while encouraging iterative testing and refinement. Additionally, students explore real-world applications of STEM in space exploration and satellite technology, preparing them for future studies in aerospace, electronics, and systems engineering.
Who It's For
Designed for students in Years 5 to 10, this kit is suitable for classroom science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs, as well as dedicated STEM electives and after-school clubs. It aligns with subject areas including Digital Technologies, Science (Physical Sciences), and Design and Technologies. The modular difficulty allows differentiation for younger students focusing on assembly and basic concepts, while older students can explore advanced topics such as energy efficiency, data logging, and satellite communication principles.
Australian Curriculum Links
This kit directly supports the Australian Curriculum: Science (ACSSU097, ACSSU155, ACSSU182) by exploring energy transfer, forces, and the solar system. It addresses Digital Technologies (ACTDIK001, ACTDIP013, ACTDIP029) through the integration of sensors and data interpretation. For Design and Technologies (ACTDEK019, ACTDEK031), students apply materials, systems, and components to create a solution. The STEM F-10 framework is embedded through cross-disciplinary problem-solving, design iteration, and real-world context. Teachers can easily map activities to relevant content descriptions for reporting and curriculum alignment.
Coding Platform
No coding required. The kit operates on a plug-and-play basis with pre-programmed microcontrollers and solar-powered circuits. However, optional extension activities are available for teachers who wish to introduce basic coding via block-based platforms like Scratch or Python, using additional components (sold separately). This flexibility allows classrooms to focus on hands-on assembly without the need for programming expertise.
What's in the Box
Each kit includes: 1 pre-cut satellite frame (laser-cut plywood or durable plastic), 2 high-efficiency solar panels, 1 rechargeable battery pack, 1 microcontroller unit with pre-loaded firmware, 1 set of sensors (light, temperature, and tilt), 1 LED array for data output, 1 USB charging cable, 1 set of interconnecting wires and connectors, 1 assembly guide with step-by-step instructions, and 1 set of decals for customisation. All components are classroom-tested for durability and safety.
Classroom Setup & Requirements
Recommended for groups of 2 to 4 students per kit. Requires a flat workspace with access to natural or artificial light for solar panel testing. No soldering or specialised tools needed; assembly uses snap-fit or screw-based connections. For optimal solar charging, position near a window or under a 40W equivalent LED lamp. Each kit takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes for initial assembly, with additional time for testing and iteration. Teachers should have basic familiarity with simple circuits, though the guide includes troubleshooting tips. Storage in a dry, dust-free environment is advised.
