What Students Will Learn

Students will explore fundamental principles of aerodynamics, circuit design, and energy transfer through hands-on construction and testing of LED light-up boomerangs. They will investigate how wing shape, weight distribution, and material selection affect flight performance, while developing skills in scientific inquiry, data collection, and iterative design. The integrated LED circuits provide a practical context for learning about electrical circuits, conductivity, and the relationship between energy input and light output.

Who It's For

This product is designed for students in Years 3 to 8, with adaptable activities for primary and secondary classrooms. It is suitable for Science, Design and Technologies, and STEM elective subjects, including cross-curricular projects linking physics, engineering, and mathematics.

Australian Curriculum Links

This resource aligns with the Australian Curriculum: Science (Physical Sciences sub-strand) for Years 3–6, focusing on forces, motion, and energy. It also supports Digital Technologies outcomes for Years 5–8 through investigation of systems and data collection. Key curriculum codes include ACSSU076 (forces), ACSSU097 (electrical circuits), and ACTDEK019 (designing and producing solutions). The boomerang activity can be integrated into the STEM F-10 framework for inquiry-based learning and design thinking.

Coding Platform

No coding required. This is a hands-on, unplugged STEM activity that focuses on physical construction and scientific observation. Teachers can optionally extend the experience by using data logging tools to measure flight distance or time.

What's in the Box

Each set includes 10 pre-cut boomerang blanks (made from lightweight, durable foam board), 10 LED modules with pre-soldered wires and battery holders, 10 coin cell batteries (CR2032), 10 sets of adhesive mounting squares, and a comprehensive teacher guide with lesson plans, safety notes, and curriculum mapping. Additional consumables (e.g., markers, tape) are not included but are commonly available in classrooms.

Classroom Setup & Requirements

Each student or pair requires a flat work surface, scissors, and a small Phillips-head screwdriver (for battery installation). A clear outdoor space of at least 20 metres x 20 metres is recommended for safe flight testing. The activity can be completed in two 45-minute sessions: one for construction and circuit assembly, and one for testing and data collection. No specialised lab equipment is needed.
