What Students Will Learn
Students develop fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and spatial reasoning through hands-on stacking and sorting activities. The Rainbow Stacking Cubes encourage problem-solving, pattern recognition, and early mathematical concepts such as size comparison, sequencing, and counting. As students manipulate the cubes, they strengthen the small muscles in their hands and fingers, which supports writing and other precision tasks. The activity also fosters concentration, persistence, and independent exploration—key foundations for STEM learning in the early years.
Who It's For
Designed for Foundation to Year 2 students, the Rainbow Stacking Cubes are ideal for use in Mathematics, Science, and Design and Technologies lessons. They support cross-curricular learning in early childhood and primary classrooms, as well as in specialist STEM programs and play-based learning centres. The product is suitable for individual, pair, or small group activities, and can be integrated into structured lessons or free exploration time.
Australian Curriculum Links
Mathematics (Foundation to Year 2): Compare and order objects based on length, area, volume, and capacity (ACMMG006, ACMMG019, ACMMG037). Sort and classify objects using one or more attributes (ACMNA005). Count collections and represent numbers (ACMNA002, ACMNA013).
Science (Foundation to Year 2): Participate in guided investigations to explore observable changes and properties of materials (ACSIS011, ACSIS024, ACSIS038). Use informal measurements to compare objects (ACSIS014, ACSIS026).
Design and Technologies (Foundation to Year 2): Explore the characteristics and properties of materials and components (ACTDEK004). Generate, develop, and record design ideas through hands-on activities (ACTDEP006, ACTDEP007).
STEM F-10: The Rainbow Stacking Cubes support the development of problem-solving, critical thinking, and collaborative skills as outlined in the STEM F-10 framework, with particular emphasis on integrating mathematics and science inquiry in early years contexts.
Coding Platform
No coding required. The Rainbow Stacking Cubes are a hands-on, unplugged resource that builds foundational skills without the need for digital devices or software.
What's in the Box
Each set includes 10 brightly coloured stacking cubes, ranging in size from approximately 5 cm to 15 cm. The cubes are made from durable, lightweight cardboard with a smooth finish, designed for repeated classroom use. Each cube features a different colour and size, with numbers and simple patterns printed on the sides to extend learning opportunities. The set is packaged in a reusable storage box for easy organisation.
Classroom Setup & Requirements
No special setup or equipment is required. The cubes can be used on any flat surface such as a desk, mat, or floor area. For whole-class activities, we recommend one set per 2–4 students. For independent or small group work, one set per group is sufficient. The cubes are lightweight and safe for young learners, with no small parts that pose a choking hazard. Storage in the included box ensures quick clean-up and tidy classroom management.
