What Students Will Learn
This Busy Board Fine Motor Toy is designed to develop critical fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and problem-solving abilities in early learners. Through hands-on manipulation of latches, zippers, buttons, and switches, students practice real-world tasks that build dexterity and concentration. The board also introduces cause-and-effect reasoning, sequencing, and basic logic—foundational skills for later STEM learning. Each activity encourages independent exploration and persistence, supporting cognitive and physical development in a playful, structured context.
Who It's For
This product is ideal for Preschool and Foundation (Prep/Kindergarten) students, typically ages 3–5 years. It aligns with early childhood education settings, including preschools, childcare centres, and Foundation year classrooms. Subject areas include Early Years STEM, Design and Technologies, and Personal and Social Capability. The board is especially valuable for special education settings and intervention programs targeting fine motor development.
Australian Curriculum Links
This Busy Board supports key learning outcomes from the Australian Curriculum: Foundation to Year 1. In Digital Technologies, it introduces basic systems thinking and control (e.g., switches, latches) as students explore how everyday objects work. In Science, it fosters inquiry skills such as observing, predicting, and testing cause and effect. The board also links to the STEM F-10 framework by integrating design, engineering, and problem-solving processes. Specific content descriptors include: AC9TDIFK01 (explore and describe patterns in everyday objects) and AC9SFI01 (respond to questions about familiar objects and events).
Coding Platform
No coding required. This is a screen-free, unplugged learning tool that builds pre-coding skills such as sequencing, logic, and following step-by-step instructions. Ideal for introducing computational thinking without digital devices.
What's in the Box
Each Busy Board includes: 1 wooden activity board (approximately 30 cm x 40 cm) with 8–10 interactive elements including a zipper, toggle latch, buckle, button, snap, switch, spinning wheel, and lacing cord. All components are securely mounted with child-safe fastenings. The board is made from sustainably sourced timber and finished with non-toxic, water-based paint. No additional accessories required.
Classroom Setup & Requirements
The Busy Board requires no power, batteries, or internet connection. It can be used on a tabletop, mat, or floor. For group activities, place the board in a designated fine motor station or sensory play area. Individual or pair work is recommended. Minimal space is needed—approximately 50 cm x 40 cm per board. The board is lightweight and portable, making it easy to store on shelves or in tubs. No specialist training is required for teachers; simply demonstrate the activities and supervise.
