What Students Will Learn

This DIY Automatic Foam Hand Wash Model Kit provides students with a practical, hands-on introduction to sensor-based automation and the engineering design process. By building a working model of a touchless soap dispenser, students explore key STEM concepts including infrared (IR) sensing, motor control, and fluid dynamics. They will learn how electronic components integrate with mechanical systems to solve real-world problems, such as hygiene and accessibility. The kit also develops critical thinking and troubleshooting skills as students test and refine their model’s performance, linking theoretical knowledge to tangible outcomes.

Who It's For

This kit is designed for students in Years 5 through 9, with particular relevance to Digital Technologies, Science, and STEM elective subjects. It suits both classroom and specialist STEM lab environments, offering a challenging yet accessible project for mixed-ability groups. The kit can be used as a standalone activity or integrated into broader units on automation, energy systems, or health technology.

Australian Curriculum Links

This resource directly supports the Australian Curriculum: Digital Technologies (F-10), specifically addressing outcomes related to designing, modifying, and following algorithms (ACTDIP019, ACTDIP025) and representing data using digital systems (ACTDIK008). In Science, it aligns with Physical Sciences content descriptions on electrical circuits and energy transfer (ACSSU097, ACSSU155). For STEM F-10, the kit supports the integration of Design and Technologies processes, including generating and communicating design ideas (ACTDEP025, ACTDEP035).

Coding Platform

No coding required. This kit uses a pre-programmed microcontroller module that operates the IR sensor and pump mechanism automatically. This allows students to focus on the mechanical and electronic assembly, as well as the system's functionality, without needing programming skills. For extension activities, the microcontroller can be reprogrammed using compatible software (not included), but the core project is complete without coding.

What's in the Box

Each kit includes: 1 pre-programmed IR sensor and motor control module, 1 DC pump, 1 clear plastic bottle (capacity 250 mL), 1 set of silicone tubing, 1 acrylic base plate, 1 set of screws and standoffs, 1 foam nozzle assembly, 1 instruction manual with wiring diagram and assembly steps. Also included are 4 AA batteries (not rechargeable) and a small Phillips-head screwdriver. All components are reusable for multiple builds.

Classroom Setup & Requirements

This kit requires only basic tools (small Phillips-head screwdriver) and 4 AA batteries per kit. Ideally, provide a clean, flat work surface and access to running water for testing. Allow approximately 60–90 minutes for first-time assembly. For group work, we recommend one kit per 2–3 students. The kit is designed for indoor use only and should not be submerged in water. Teachers should supervise the handling of small electronic components, particularly the pump and sensor module.
