What Students Will Learn
Students will explore the principles of civil engineering, structural design, and physics through hands-on construction of a functional cable-stayed bridge model. This kit introduces key concepts including tension and compression forces, load distribution, structural stability, and the engineering design process. Learners will develop problem-solving skills, spatial reasoning, and collaboration as they test and refine their bridge designs. The activity also encourages critical thinking about real-world infrastructure and the role of STEM in solving engineering challenges.
Who It's For
Designed for students in Years 5 to 10, this kit is ideal for Science, Design and Technologies, and STEM elective classes. It supports cross-curricular learning, making it suitable for extension activities in mathematics (measurement, geometry, and data analysis) and physics (forces and simple machines). The kit is particularly valuable for school STEM clubs, enrichment programs, and project-based learning units focused on engineering and sustainability.
Australian Curriculum Links
This product aligns with the Australian Curriculum: Digital Technologies (data representation and algorithms), Science (physical sciences – forces and motion), and STEM F-10 (engineering design and systems thinking). Specific content descriptors include: AC9S5U03 (forces can be exerted by one object on another through direct contact or from a distance), AC9TDE8K02 (design and technologies principles and processes), and AC9TDE10K03 (how engineers use forces and structures to create solutions). Teachers can easily map the activity to their school’s scope and sequence for integrated STEM learning.
Coding Platform
No coding required. This is a purely hands-on, physical construction kit that focuses on structural engineering principles, design iteration, and teamwork. It is an excellent unplugged STEM activity that complements digital learning without the need for software or devices.
What's in the Box
Each kit includes: pre-cut wooden bridge components (deck, towers, and trusses), high-tensile string for cable construction, metal connectors and eye hooks, detailed assembly instructions with diagrams, and a student guide with engineering challenges. Also included are testing weights and a measuring tape for load analysis. All materials are reusable and classroom-tested for durability.
Classroom Setup & Requirements
This kit requires a clear, flat workspace of approximately 1m x 0.5m per group. Recommended group size is 2–4 students. Basic tools such as scissors and rulers may be needed, but no specialist equipment is required. The activity can be completed in 2–3 one-hour sessions, including design, construction, testing, and reflection. Teachers should prepare for a small amount of string cutting and knot tying. A demonstration model is recommended for initial instruction.
