What Students Will Learn
Students explore the principles of fiber optics, light transmission, and circuitry as they build their own functional star lamp. This hands-on kit introduces key STEM concepts including electrical circuits, optical fibre behaviour, and design thinking. Learners develop problem-solving skills and fine motor coordination while constructing a working model that demonstrates how light travels through flexible transparent fibres. The activity also encourages creativity through custom lamp design and pattern creation.
Who It's For
Suitable for students in Years 5 to 10, this kit integrates seamlessly into Science, Digital Technologies, and Design and Technologies learning areas. It is ideal for classroom STEM projects, after-school clubs, or enrichment activities that require a practical understanding of light, materials, and basic electronics.
Australian Curriculum Links
Science (F-10): Addresses content descriptions related to light and electrical circuits, including how light travels (ACSSU080) and how electrical energy can be transferred and transformed (ACSSU097).
Digital Technologies (F-10): Supports understanding of digital systems and data representation through the use of fibre optics in communication technologies (ACTDIK034).
STEM F-10: Aligns with integrated STEM learning outcomes, promoting inquiry, design, and problem-solving across multiple disciplines.
Coding Platform
No coding required. This kit focuses on physical construction and electrical principles, making it accessible without prior programming experience.
What's in the Box
