What Students Will Learn

Students explore the science of sound, audio amplification, and digital signal processing by constructing their own HiFi music player from components. They will understand how sound waves are captured, converted to electrical signals, and amplified. The kit introduces key concepts in physics (wave properties, frequency, amplitude), electronics (circuits, resistors, capacitors), and digital technologies (coding for audio playback and control). Students gain hands-on experience in soldering, troubleshooting, and programming, fostering problem-solving and design thinking skills.

Recommended for Years 7–10, this kit is ideal for Science, Digital Technologies, and STEM elective classes. It supports differentiated learning across middle and secondary school levels, with extension opportunities for senior students in physics or engineering pathways.

Australian Curriculum Links

This kit directly supports the Australian Curriculum: Science (ACSSU182 – energy transfer through sound; ACSSU185 – wave properties) and Digital Technologies (ACTDIP030 – designing algorithms; ACTDIP031 – implementing digital solutions). It also aligns with the STEM F–10 framework, integrating science inquiry, engineering design, and digital literacy. Teachers can map activities to outcomes in physical sciences, digital systems, and design and technologies.

Coding Platform

Programmed using the Arduino IDE (C++). Students write code to control audio playback, volume, and user interface elements. The kit includes pre-written example code and guided challenges. No prior coding experience is required, but familiarity with basic programming concepts is beneficial. Full code and tutorials are provided on the Stemology resource portal.

Classroom Setup & Requirements

Each kit requires a computer (Windows, Mac, or Chromebook) with the Arduino IDE installed (free download). A USB port is needed for programming. Soldering iron and solder are recommended but not essential (breadboard version included). For a class of 30 students, we suggest 15 kits for pair work. Additional components such as headphones or external speakers can enhance the experience. No internet connection is required during assembly, but online resources are available for extended learning.
