What Students Will Learn
Students will explore the principles of infrared communication, circuit design, and motor control by building a functional remote-controlled fan. Through hands-on assembly, they will understand how infrared signals are transmitted and received, how transistors amplify current, and how a motor is controlled by a remote signal. The kit reinforces key STEM concepts including energy transfer, electrical circuits, and the engineering design process. Students will also develop problem-solving skills as they troubleshoot connections and optimise fan performance.
Who It's For
This kit is designed for students in Years 5–9, with applications in Science, Design and Technologies, and STEM elective classes. It is suitable for both primary extension and secondary introductory electronics units. The project can be completed individually or in pairs, making it ideal for classroom workshops, STEM clubs, or inquiry-based learning modules.
Australian Curriculum Links
This product aligns with the Australian Curriculum F-10 across multiple learning areas:
Digital Technologies: Years 5–6 – explain how digital systems represent data and how data is transmitted (ACTDIK014). Years 7–8 – investigate how data is transmitted and secured in wired and wireless networks (ACTDIK023).
Science: Years 5–6 – electrical circuits provide a means of transferring and transforming electricity (ACSSU097). Years 7–8 – energy transfer through devices and systems (ACSSU155).
Design and Technologies: Years 5–8 – design and produce solutions using materials, tools, and digital technologies (ACTDEP025).
STEM F-10: Supports integrated STEM learning by combining electronics, design thinking, and data transmission concepts.
Coding Platform
No coding required. This kit focuses on hardware assembly and circuit understanding. It is an excellent introductory project before moving into programmable electronics or microcontroller-based kits.
What's in the Box
Each kit includes:
- Infrared receiver module
- Infrared remote control
- DC motor with fan blade
- Transistor and resistor set
- Battery holder with leads (batteries not included – requires 2x AA)
- Pre-cut wires and connection clips
- Plastic fan stand base and support frame
- Step-by-step illustrated assembly guide
- Teacher notes with circuit diagrams and discussion prompts
Classroom Setup & Requirements
Each student or pair requires one kit, a small workspace, and a pair of scissors. No soldering is required – all connections use clip-on wires. The project takes approximately 45–60 minutes to complete. Teachers should allow time for testing and troubleshooting. For best results, ensure each group has clear line-of-sight between the remote and receiver. A classroom with standard lighting is fine; infrared works reliably in most indoor environments.
