DIY Infrared Remote Light Model

What Students Will Learn

This hands-on kit introduces students to the principles of infrared communication, electrical circuits, and light control systems. By building their own remote-controlled light model, students will explore how sensors and emitters work together to send and receive signals. They will gain practical experience in circuit assembly, troubleshooting, and understanding the role of infrared technology in everyday devices such as TV remotes and automatic lighting. The activity fosters problem-solving skills, logical thinking, and an appreciation for how digital systems interact with the physical world.

Who It's For

Designed for students in Years 5 to 8, this product is ideal for classroom use in Digital Technologies, Science, and STEM F-10 programs. It supports both introductory and intermediate levels of learning, making it suitable for mixed-ability groups. Teachers can integrate it into units on energy, systems, or data transmission.

Australian Curriculum Links

This product directly supports the Australian Curriculum F-10 in Digital Technologies and Science. Key content descriptors include: Digital Technologies – investigating how digital systems represent and transmit data (ACTDIK023, ACTDIK024), and designing algorithms to control devices (ACTDIP025, ACTDIP029). Science – exploring electrical circuits and energy transfer (ACSSU097, ACSSU219). STEM F-10 – applying knowledge of systems and technologies to solve real-world problems. Teachers can easily map this activity to their school’s scope and sequence plans.

Coding Platform

No coding required. This model operates via a pre-programmed infrared remote and receiver module, allowing students to focus on hardware assembly and understanding signal transmission without the need for software programming. For extension activities, educators can integrate simple coding using platforms like Arduino or Micro:bit (not included).

What's in the Box

Each kit contains: 1 infrared remote control (battery included), 1 infrared receiver module, 1 LED light module, 1 breadboard, 1 set of connecting wires, 1 battery holder (requires 2x AA batteries – not included), 1 plastic base plate, and a full-colour instruction booklet with step-by-step assembly guidance and classroom activity suggestions.

Classroom Setup & Requirements

Each kit requires 2x AA batteries (not supplied) and a flat work surface. No additional tools are needed. For optimal use, we recommend one kit per pair or small group of students (2-3 learners). The activity can be completed in a single 45-60 minute session, with extension tasks for deeper exploration. Teachers should have basic familiarity with simple circuits; the included guide provides clear instructions for classroom management.
