What Students Will Learn
This DIY Physical Scale Science Project Kit provides a hands-on exploration of measurement, force, and equilibrium. Students will construct a functioning physical scale from supplied components, applying principles of levers, fulcrums, and mass comparison. The kit reinforces key scientific concepts including calibration, precision, and the relationship between mass and weight. Through the building process, students develop fine motor skills, problem-solving abilities, and an appreciation for how scientific instruments operate. The activity encourages inquiry-based learning as students test their scales, identify sources of error, and refine their designs for improved accuracy.
Who It's For
This kit is designed for students in Years 5 to 8, aligning with upper primary and lower secondary curriculum levels. It is suitable for Science, Design and Technologies, and STEM elective subjects. The project can be used as a standalone investigation into forces and measurement, or integrated into broader units on physical sciences, engineering design, and data collection. It is ideal for classroom groups of up to 30 students, with each kit supporting one or two learners working collaboratively.
Australian Curriculum Links
This kit supports the Australian Curriculum: Science (F-10) by addressing Science Understanding (Physical Sciences) at Years 5–6, where students explore how forces can be exerted by objects and how they affect the motion and balance of objects. It also links to Science Inquiry Skills, including planning and conducting investigations, using equipment, and representing data. In Design and Technologies, students apply knowledge of materials, systems, and processes to create a functional product. The kit can complement Digital Technologies learning by introducing data logging and graphical representation of measurements, though no coding is required for the core activity.
Coding Platform
No coding required. This is a purely hands-on physical construction kit, allowing students to focus on mechanical principles and scientific measurement without the need for digital programming.
What's in the Box
Each kit contains: pre-cut wooden beam and base components, metal fulcrum and pivot pins, plastic scale pan and counterweight set, calibration masses (various sizes), nylon string for suspension, assembly instructions with diagrams, and a teacher guide with suggested lesson plans and extension activities. All parts are reusable and designed for multiple classroom sessions.
Classroom Setup & Requirements
No specialist equipment is required beyond standard classroom tools such as scissors and rulers. Each kit can be assembled on a desk or tabletop within a single 60-minute lesson. Teachers should allow for additional time for testing and calibration. The kit is designed for low-mess, low-noise use, making it suitable for standard classroom environments. A whiteboard or projector is useful for demonstrating assembly steps and discussing scientific concepts. The teacher guide includes risk assessment notes and safety considerations.
