This DIY Remote Control Tank STEM Kit introduces students to core principles of mechanics, electronics, and systems thinking. Through hands-on assembly and operation, students gain practical understanding of gear systems, motor control, circuit connections, and wireless communication. The kit fosters problem-solving skills as students troubleshoot and refine their tank's performance, while encouraging creativity through customisation. By the end of the project, students will have built a functioning remote-controlled vehicle and acquired foundational knowledge applicable to robotics and engineering design.
Designed for students in Years 5 to 9, this kit aligns with upper primary and lower secondary STEM education. It is particularly suited for Digital Technologies, Science, and Design and Technology subject areas. The kit supports differentiated learning, with simpler assembly tasks for younger students and extended challenges for older learners, such as modifying gear ratios or adding sensors. Ideal for classroom projects, STEM clubs, or elective units focused on engineering and robotics.
This kit directly supports several Australian Curriculum F-10 content descriptors, including:
Teachers can easily integrate the kit into existing STEM units or as a standalone project-based learning activity.
No coding required. This kit uses a pre-programmed remote control and receiver module, allowing students to focus on mechanical assembly and electrical connections. Optional extension activities can incorporate programmable microcontrollers (sold separately) for advanced students to add custom coding features.
Each kit requires 4 x AA batteries (not included) for the tank and 2 x AA batteries for the remote. Assembly takes approximately 60–90 minutes, with students working in pairs or small groups. A clear floor space of at least 2m x 2m per group is recommended for testing and operation. No specialist tools are needed; all assembly components are included. The kit is reusable and durable for multiple classroom sessions.
