DIY School Project Craft Model

What Students Will Learn

This curriculum-aligned DIY School Project Craft Model provides students with a hands-on opportunity to explore fundamental engineering and design principles. Through assembling and customising their own functional model, students develop problem-solving skills, spatial reasoning, and an understanding of structural integrity. They will learn to follow sequential instructions, test and refine their designs, and apply key STEM concepts such as force, motion, and material properties. The project encourages creativity while reinforcing critical thinking and perseverance, preparing students for more advanced STEM challenges.

Who It's For

Designed for upper primary to lower secondary students (Years 4–8), this product is ideal for classroom use in Science, Design and Technologies, and Mathematics. It supports cross-curricular integration and can be easily adapted for STEM clubs, extension activities, or whole-class projects. The model's flexibility allows teachers to align it with specific learning outcomes across multiple subject areas.

Australian Curriculum Links

This product directly supports the Australian Curriculum: Science (ACSSU076, ACSSU117), Design and Technologies (ACTDEK010, ACTDEP017), and Mathematics (ACMMG110, ACMMG222). It is also mapped to the STEM F-10 Integrated Curriculum, addressing key capabilities such as critical and creative thinking, personal and social capability, and ethical understanding. The model provides a tangible context for students to apply scientific inquiry, design processes, and mathematical reasoning, meeting core curriculum requirements across multiple year levels.

Coding Platform

No coding required. This product focuses on hands-on construction and design, making it accessible to all students regardless of prior programming experience. Teachers can easily integrate optional extensions using simple mechanical or electronic components if desired, but the core activity requires no digital coding.

What's in the Box

Each kit contains all materials needed for a complete classroom project: pre-cut craft pieces (wood, card, or sustainable materials), assembly hardware (screws, nuts, bolts, or connectors), step-by-step illustrated instructions, teacher guide with curriculum links, and a set of challenge cards for extension activities. Also included are safety guidelines and a list of optional tools (e.g., glue, scissors) that may be required from the classroom. The kit is designed for up to 30 students working individually or in pairs.

Classroom Setup & Requirements

This project requires basic classroom tools such as scissors, glue, and a flat workspace. No specialist equipment is needed. The model can be completed in 2–3 one-hour sessions, allowing for flexible scheduling. The teacher guide includes suggestions for group work, differentiation, and assessment rubrics. The kit is easy to store and reusable for multiple classes if materials are handled carefully. A dedicated storage box is recommended but not required.
