DIY Solar Helicopter Wooden Puzzle Kit
Harness the power of the sun to build and fly your own helicopter—no batteries required. This hands-on kit introduces students to renewable energy, mechanical engineering, and sustainable design through a single engaging project.
What Students Will Learn
Students explore key STEM concepts including solar energy conversion, electric circuits, gear mechanisms, and aerodynamics. They will develop skills in following technical diagrams, fine motor assembly, problem-solving, and iterative testing. The kit encourages inquiry into how solar panels generate electricity to power a motor, and how propeller design affects lift and flight performance.
Who It's For
Designed for students in Years 3 to 8, this kit aligns with Science, Design and Technologies, and Mathematics learning areas. It is suitable for classroom STEM rotations, extension activities, lunchtime clubs, or as a take-home project. The complexity of assembly can be scaffolded for different year levels, with younger students focusing on basic construction and older students investigating efficiency and design variables.
Australian Curriculum Links
This kit directly supports the Australian Curriculum: Science (ACSSU097 – electrical energy can be transferred and transformed; ACSSU076 – forces can be exerted by one object on another), Design and Technologies (ACTDEK019 – how forces and materials influence design; ACTDEP025 – evaluate design ideas and processes), and Mathematics (ACMMG108 – measurement and geometry). It also addresses STEM F-10 capabilities in problem-solving, critical thinking, and systems thinking.
Coding Platform
No coding required. This kit focuses on hands-on construction and analogue energy systems, making it accessible to all students regardless of prior coding experience. Teachers can optionally extend the activity by having students document their design process or calculate efficiency using simple formulas.
What's in the Box
Each kit contains: pre-cut wooden puzzle pieces for the helicopter body and rotor assembly, a high-efficiency solar panel, a DC motor, a propeller, connecting wires, a motor holder, and a step-by-step illustrated instruction guide. All components are reusable and designed for multiple builds. No additional tools or consumables are required.
Classroom Setup & Requirements
Each kit is designed for individual or pair work. A clear workspace with access to natural or artificial light is sufficient for testing. For optimal solar performance, use near a window or under a strong desk lamp. No soldering or glue is required, making setup quick and low-mess. Allow approximately 45–60 minutes for assembly and testing. Teachers should have a Phillips-head screwdriver on hand for final motor mounting.
