What Students Will Learn
Students will explore fundamental principles of renewable energy and electromagnetism by constructing a functional wind generator. They will investigate how kinetic energy from wind is converted into electrical energy, understanding key concepts such as turbine blade design, gear ratios, and energy transfer. Through hands-on experimentation, learners will measure voltage output under different wind speeds and blade configurations, developing skills in data collection, analysis, and iterative design. This kit fosters critical thinking about sustainable energy solutions and real-world engineering challenges.
Who It's For
Designed for students in Years 5 to 10, this kit is ideally suited for Science, Design and Technologies, and STEM elective classes. It supports cross-curricular learning in physics, engineering, and environmental studies, making it a versatile resource for both primary and secondary school settings. The activities can be adapted for individual or small group work, with extension tasks available for advanced learners.
Australian Curriculum Links
This product directly aligns with the Australian Curriculum F-10 for Science and Technologies. Key content descriptors include: Science – exploring energy transformation (ACSSU097, ACSSU219) and forces that cause movement (ACSSU117); Design and Technologies – generating and communicating design ideas (ACTDEP025, ACTDEP036) and applying engineering principles to produce solutions (ACTDEP037); STEM – integrating science, mathematics, and technology to solve real-world problems (STEM F-10). The kit also supports Digital Technologies outcomes through optional data logging and analysis.
Coding Platform
No coding required. This kit is fully hands-on and does not involve software or programming. However, teachers may incorporate digital data collection tools (e.g., micro:bit or Arduino) for extension activities if desired.
What's in the Box
Each kit includes: pre-cut turbine blades (3 sets of varying angles), a DC motor/generator unit, a plastic hub and axle assembly, a multimeter for voltage measurement, a LED indicator light, connecting wires, a base stand with mounting bracket, and a detailed instruction booklet with curriculum-aligned lesson plans. All components are reusable and designed for multiple classroom sessions. Additional consumables (e.g., replacement blades) are available separately.
Classroom Setup & Requirements
To operate the wind generator, a fan or wind source (e.g., a desk fan or hair dryer) is required. Each kit works best with a clear workspace and access to a power outlet for the fan. For group work, we recommend one kit per 2-3 students. No soldering or specialised tools are needed; assembly is tool-free. The kit is compact and stores easily in a classroom cupboard. For optimal results, use in a low-draft room to minimise variable air currents.
