DIY Wireless Walkie Talkie Model

What Students Will Learn

Students explore the fundamentals of wireless communication and radio frequency (RF) transmission by building a functional walkie talkie model from scratch. This hands-on activity introduces key STEM concepts including circuit design, signal modulation, antenna theory, and the engineering design process. Students will develop problem-solving skills, soldering and assembly techniques, and an understanding of how sound waves are converted to electrical signals and transmitted wirelessly. The project culminates in a working device that students can test and refine, reinforcing iterative design and real-world application of physics and electronics principles.

Who It's For

Designed for students in Years 7–10, this product is ideal for STEM electives, Digital Technologies classes, Science units on energy and waves, and after-school maker clubs. It supports differentiated learning and can be adapted for advanced primary students (Year 5–6) with teacher guidance or as an extension activity for senior secondary students exploring electronics and communications. Subject areas include Science, Digital Technologies, Design and Technologies, and Physics.

Australian Curriculum Links

This product aligns with the Australian Curriculum F–10 in the following areas:

  • Digital Technologies: Processes and production skills (AC9TDI8P01, AC9TDI10P01) – designing and testing digital solutions, understanding data transmission and communication protocols.
  • Science: Physical sciences (AC9S8U04, AC9S10U04) – exploring wave properties, energy transfer, and electromagnetic radiation; Science as a human endeavour (AC9S8H01, AC9S10H01) – investigating how scientific understanding of radio waves enables communication technologies.
  • Design and Technologies: Engineering principles and systems (AC9TDE8K01, AC9TDE10K01) – analysing and applying electrical circuits and components to meet design briefs.
  • STEM F–10: Integrated STEM learning outcomes including problem-solving, collaboration, and applying cross-disciplinary knowledge to create functional prototypes.

Coding Platform

No coding required. This product focuses on hardware assembly and circuit-based communication. Optional extensions may involve using a microcontroller to enhance functionality, but the core build is code-free, making it accessible to students without programming experience.

What's in the Box

Each kit contains all components needed to build two walkie talkie units (one pair):

  • 2x pre-soldered circuit boards with ICs and capacitors
  • 2x antenna wires and connectors
  • 2x speaker/microphone modules
  • 2x power switches and battery holders (requires 2x 9V batteries, not included)
  • 2x plastic enclosures with screws and assembly tools
  • Wiring harnesses, resistors, and trim potentiometers
  • Step-by-step illustrated assembly guide with troubleshooting tips
  • Teacher resource booklet with curriculum mapping and discussion prompts

Classroom Setup & Requirements

Each kit requires approximately 2–3 hours of classroom time, split across two sessions. Students work in pairs or small groups. Basic soldering skills are recommended; soldering irons and solder are not included. A well-ventilated workspace with access to multimeters and wire strippers is helpful. Recommended class size: up to 30 students using 15 kits. No internet or computer access is needed, making it suitable for any classroom environment. Batteries (2x 9V per pair) are required and not supplied. Teachers should review the assembly guide prior to the lesson.
