What Students Will Learn
Students will explore fundamental engineering and physics concepts by constructing a functioning wooden elevator. This hands-on kit teaches principles of mechanical advantage, pulley systems, and load distribution. Learners develop problem-solving skills, spatial reasoning, and fine motor coordination as they assemble the lift mechanism. The project also introduces basic structural design and the importance of precision in following technical instructions. By completing the elevator, students gain a tangible understanding of how simple machines work together to perform real-world tasks.
Who It's For
Designed for students in Years 3 to 8, this kit aligns with primary and lower secondary STEM curricula. It is suitable for classroom use in Design and Technology, Science, and integrated STEM programs. The project can be adapted for individual or small group work, making it ideal for differentiation across ability levels.
Australian Curriculum Links
This kit supports the Australian Curriculum: Science (ACSSU076 – forces and motion; ACSSU117 – energy transfer) and Design and Technologies (ACTDEK013 – mechanical systems; ACTDEP017 – producing designed solutions). It also addresses STEM F-10 learning outcomes related to engineering design processes and collaborative problem-solving.
Coding Platform
No coding required. This is a purely mechanical engineering project that focuses on hands-on construction and physics principles.
What's in the Box
Each kit includes pre-cut wooden laser-cut pieces, a pulley system, axles, string, sandpaper for smoothing edges, and illustrated assembly instructions. All components are sustainably sourced and non-toxic. No additional tools or materials are needed for assembly.
Classroom Setup & Requirements
Students require a flat work surface and approximately 45-60 minutes of class time for initial assembly. The kit is designed for minimal mess and can be completed in a standard classroom. No power tools, glue, or specialised equipment are necessary. Supervision is recommended for younger students during assembly.
