What Students Will Learn

Students will explore the principles of motion, energy transfer, and simple machines by constructing a working electric cable car system. This kit introduces fundamental concepts in physics and engineering, including pulley systems, electric circuits, and load-bearing structures. Through hands-on assembly and testing, learners develop problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and an understanding of how real-world transport systems operate. The activity also fosters collaboration and iterative design as students modify their cable car to improve speed, stability, or efficiency.

Who It's For

Designed for students in Years 5 to 8, this kit is ideal for classroom science and technology units, STEM enrichment programs, and design thinking workshops. It aligns with subject areas including Science, Digital Technologies, and Design and Technologies within the STEM F-10 framework. The kit supports differentiated learning, with extension challenges suitable for upper primary and lower secondary levels.

Australian Curriculum Links

This product addresses key content descriptions across multiple learning areas. In Science (Years 5–6), it supports understanding of forces, electricity, and energy transfer (ACSSU077, ACSSU097). In Digital Technologies (Years 5–8), it connects to designing algorithms and controlling systems (ACTDIP019, ACTDIP029). For Design and Technologies (Years 5–8), it links to generating and producing designed solutions (ACTDEK019, ACTDEK029). The kit also supports cross-curriculum priorities such as sustainability and critical and creative thinking.

Coding Platform

No coding required. The Electric Cable Car System Science Kit is a fully mechanical and electrical construction kit that does not rely on programmable components. This makes it accessible for classrooms without access to computers or tablets, while still providing rich opportunities for inquiry-based learning and STEM skill development.

What's in the Box

Each kit includes: pre-cut wooden chassis components, electric motor with wires, pulley wheels, string or cable, battery holder with switch, metal connectors, screws and nuts, assembly instructions, and a teacher guide with suggested classroom activities. All components are reusable and designed for multiple builds. The kit is packaged in a sturdy box for easy storage and inventory management.

Classroom Setup & Requirements

Each kit requires a flat workspace and basic tools such as a screwdriver (not included). A single kit is ideal for groups of 2–4 students. For a class of 30, we recommend ordering 8–10 kits to allow for collaborative group work. The kit requires 2 x AA batteries (not included). No additional materials are needed. The assembly time is approximately 45–60 minutes, with additional time for testing and modification. A clear floor area or table edge is useful for testing the cable car system.
